Leafs. Drew Doughty in 8 years is coming up on 40. Marner In 8 years is 30 and still in his prime. Maybe a fair trade at this moment in time but 5 years down the road... yikes

I get what you mean, and if Doughty goes downhill at 35 the last couple of years could be rough. But the contract can be bought out, and it’s a matter of trading from a strength for a huge weakness.

I think with an elite player the risk is way lower than a fringe top line guy. Especially as would be through age 37 only. And the last 4 years are easily buy outable or tradable. However, as a Leaf fan and hearing the “don’t worry about x years from now” my head just screams Clarkson! So not really a solid argument.

1) you seriously saying you wouldn’t want one of the top 5 D in the league. Sorry, but I just don’t get the Doughty hate. It’s insane to me.
2) Muzzin makes Zaitzev less embarrassing true. But he’s still brutal as soon as he gets his stick on the puck. And Muzzin likely gone in 1 year. Zaitzev has a long contract and he’s just terrible. Gardiner and Muzzin only 2 guys ever to make him not an AHL level guy.
3) Did you see my proposed trade? A former 1st rd pick (AHL prospect never a sure thing ever), and a low 2nd plus Brown. And the Leaf window is open now. Liljegren isn’t likely to contribute the next year or 2 if ever. I actually think it’s an underpay from Toronto.
4) I’m definitely hoping Marleau retires. Obviously if he doesn’t this projection is garbage. But I’m hoping he realized he embarrassed himself out there this year. If not Babcock coaching he would be in the press box all year. Was just terrible.

Also, I was talking to a buddy who lives on the left coast and watches Doughty a lot more. He convinced me that this trade is a lot better than first looked. I agree that the Leafs need D help, but it will never happen since Marleau probably won’t retire.
