Yeah I know it was a little much, but I figured that he'd want a decent increase from his ELC. It's an interesting situation, a player with promise who's burned his whole ELC without really much time to prove himself (beside his 20 some games in boston this year with a almost purely youth line or with backes). I wasn't really sure what would make sense.
Outside of giving up some quality assets to move Backes, I only see him being moved if Boston finds a middle man. Backes also doesn't seem like the kind of guy that would block every trade he could just to spite the team.

Also I'm trying to think of a good spot for backes- I figure he will want to go somewhere- not sure though. Next year he likely won't have a place in the lineup at all and I wouldn't be surprised if he retired or went on LTIR if that's possible. He's a very competitive player and I don't believe he would tolerate not playing at all.
He's not going to retire and leave millions of dollars on the table.

Also, about miller, I feel like a 2nd, or 3rd plus fourth would be a fair price. He's a solid 3rd to 2nd pairing defensman with a full year left. Look at what the capitals gave for Nick Jensen. Is the price not reasonable?
Miller's probably worth a 3rd. He's a good 3rd pairing physical d-man, but he also has the ability to contribute so offense from time to time. Kempy was had last year for a conditional 3rd and they've had similar production over the last 3 years. Kempy has produced more, but Miller is (IMO) the better shutdown defender.

Also what do you think is a good spot for studnicka? I think he's the total package (size, speed, skill, vision, solid shot, compete- I can't find a significant hole in his game). Is it too much to put him on the 2nd line? I figured he would be better served in a spot to better utilize his skill, and I thought it would be good for his growth. I think he definitely makes the team though.
I'm not sure Studnicka makes the team next year. Without any signings here what we have
Marchand - Bergeron - Heinen*
DeBrusk - Krejci - Pastrnak
Kuraly - Coyle - Khulman
Nordstrom - Backes - Wagner
*Denotes RFA status
Now I'll be honest, I don't see Nordstrom or Backes with this team next year. Kuhlman has had a pretty solid run and should have the inside track to a spot next year in the bottom 6. Kuraly IMO is perfect in his #4 role, but he maybe gets a look at #3LW So making those changes to the roster we get:
Marchand - Bergeron - Heinen*
DeBrusk - Krejci - Pastrnak
Kuraly - Coyle - Khulman
??? - ??? - Wagner
Now traditional our 4th line gets around 10 minutes a night and is asked to play a grinding shutdown role. I don't know that you want a kid like Studnicka hanging out on the 4th line getting 10 minutes a night, when he could be in PRO getting up to 20 minutes a night in a top 6 role. Now I'm not saying its impossible, but here are some guys that should be looking to force their way onto the roster next year:
JFK - C/RW
Frederic - C/LW
Senyshyn - RW
Bjork - LW/RW
Studnicka - C/RW
Cehlarik - LW/RW
That's a lot of competition for maybe 1-2 slots in the line-up.
