As a Canuck fan... I'd take that deal. What if we also included a Hutton for Hagg swap?

Cool. That's a deal that seems to work for both sides quite well. As for the Hagg for Hutton add on? I'd have to say no to that.

Wild likely decline. If we're moving Spurgeon, we had better be doing it to address the fact we have 1 (!!!!!!) right shot forward in our top 9. I could see us maybe moving Zucker for Ghost in an attempt to "replace" Spurgeon (which is pretty much impossible given he was by far our best player last year), but I can't see us moving Spurgeon for his own replacement unless we happen to get a RD prospect in a package deal. The only guys on Philly's roster I would be happy moving Spurgeon (who would have to come with an extension) for are Konecny or Patrick. Philly fans would riot if that happened, though, as nobody outside of MN other than Fletcher knows how good Spurgeon is.

Well if the demand is for the best possible RHD replacement than Philly probably isn't your deal. I believe you are undervaluing Ghost here. He's cost controlled for many more years. You're also getting a 2nd rounder and a high quality goaltending prospect. I doubt you'll get a comparable package anywhere else but if you want a young RHD you'll get one for him but the chances that player ever equals Spurgeon are highly unlikely. When you trade a veteran player you're looking for a few high quality chances for a high end player. In this deal you get 2 chances and a sure thing NHL top 6 defender in Ghost who is a big piece on a PP.

The demand would be a top 6 right shooting forward, not a RHD, and I think a team like Toronto that needs a top pairing RD would be willing to give up either Nylander or Kapanen for Spurgeon as long as we retained half of his salary and he came with an extension. I'll take either of those two over what you've given us any day. We have no need for a goaltending prospect. Kahkonen has looked awesome for long stints in the AHL and we just signed Mat Robson giving us two decent options in net for the future (both will be competing in Iowa next year so adding a 3rd AHL goalie complicates things a lot and would hinder the development of Kahkonen and Robson).

I like Ghost, but trading for him along with a pick and a goalie that wouldn't be given a good shot at developing in the AHL using Spurgeon is a not very good asset management IMO. I'd rather just keep Spurgeon.

Edit: also, based on the fact you have Spurgeon on the 2nd pairing, I'm not sure you realize how good he is. He's easily our best defenseman (better than Dumba and better than Suter), and I'd go as far to say our best player. The Athletic graded him out to be an average #1 defenseman (not a top pairing, a #1 guy) and I would agree with that statement completely. RD cost a premium since they are harder to find than LD, and #1 RD are even more pricey. There's a reason Dubnyk always gets sh*t in the media for being a system goaltender, and that reason is Jared Spurgeon. The guy is the heart and soul of our blue line.

I didn’t put Spurgeon on the 2nd pair as a slight. I thought the McDonagh Tanev pair was better than Provorov Spurgeon pair to start the year. I preferred Spurgeon with Provorov and separated the # 1 and # 2 defensemen in McDonagh and Spurgeon to maximize having a top defender being on the ice.

The best value Minny will get for Spurgeon is keeping him. It’s unlikely your trade demand will be met with him on an expiring contract.

Meh, depends on how you look at it (meaning the expiring deal bit). Spurgeon wants to win, he's said this to our media. Of course he said he wants to win here, but players aren't dumb they know we're rebuilding and time is ticking for him. He'd have a great shot to win on a team like Toronto and I'd wager he'd be willing to re-sign there. On an expiring deal Toronto would have the ability to negotiate a contract with him. They'll have plenty of money after Marleua's contract is up (which is the year Spurgeon would need a new deal). It also helps that his childhood best friend Tyler Ennis is currently on the Leafs and could be brought back next year on a cheap depth deal.

Like I've said all along, I'd be more than happy signing him long-term. It's just if we do trade him it'll have to be for the perfect pieces since he's one of our most valuable tradeable assets and the post you have here doesn't really give us the perfect pieces.

Fair enough. What would you think of a Ghost for Zucker swap?

I'd say that's pretty close to fair, although I've never been a big fan of playing defenseman on their off-side. Ghost seems like he handles it fine from the few games I've seen of him.

Yeah it’s fair but I’m leaning more towards keeping Ghost over just getting Zucker.

That was what I meant by close to fair, Philly might want slightly more value. I'm going to make a post pretty soon with a trade revolving around these two.
