He's been a tremendous player this year. And he's been better in the playoffs than Matthews and Nylander

Because he signed his contract after he was 35, if he retires the contract cap hit goes back to the team he signed with, which is Toronto. The only way he contract would not cost Toronto is if he is carried by the team on the active roster, something Arizona can not do because they have to sign other players. Also, he would have to accept the trade, which if he does win a cup he might not want to do and play one more year with Toronto.

Where did you read that?

This post assumes he is retiring. I assume he probably won't, but this is a hypothetical.

So the 35+ rule TO MY KNOWLEDGE means the cap hit remains after retirement for a greater than 1 year contract. However, again to my knowledge, the contract can be traded after the retirement and the precedent has been set with Pronger.

He was a little worse than Matthews in their first playoffs and significantly better the second.

This contract makes him the highest paid RFA winger of all time and the third highest paid winger behind Ovechkin (generational talent, top 3 or 4 goal scorer of all time), and Patrick Kane (UFA contract).

Whatever Marner gets it should be a little below what Rantanen signs for. Rantanen has significantly more goals than Marner both this year and in the last two years and about the same points this year and significantly more over the last two years.

He can be put on LTIR. Every single player in the league can say they could not play due to injury, especially after playoff run and 20yr+ career like Marleau had. I love Patty but I feel like this would be his last season.

As I mentioned, every player has injuries so with his age, his knees are likely half gone so that would do it. Maybe his back too.

I just don't see it with Marleau. I think if he's done he retires. His contract is built to allow him to do so July 2nd
