Off-season tweaks

Description
Hagelin - Good fit in our bottom six, he kills penalties at an elite level, and adds a speed threat to the lineup. $2M is around what I'd expect, but I'm thinking it's in the $1.8-2.2M range to sign him.

Connolly - give him extra term to off-set the cost he's going to command on the open market. He apparently really likes it here, and can provide some insurance later in his contract for when Oshie's level of play diminishes.

Burakovsky - tendered him a QO, and he accepts. If he doesn't accept, then let him ride it out until camp. If another team wants to offer sheet him, go for it. He's not going to get a huge return in a trade right now, unless EDM wants to reunite him with McDavid.

Djoos - hasn't played at all since Jensen entered the lineup, which lowers his price a bit. A 2 year deal should suffice here, and is still higher than what Bowey signed in his first RFA contract as a 2nd round pick after his ELC (at a higher AAV) expired.

Niskanen - his cap hit for his level of play is just too expensive. He's at career lows in CF% and FF%, and lows as a Capital in CF rel and FF rel. Vancouver needs some more leadership on their back-end, and need RHD with Tanev often injured.

Holtby - I'm holding off on trading him. If a suitor comes and offers a trade GMBM cannot refuse, so be it. Holtby is an elite playoff goalie, so trading him this off-season could be costly with Samsonov needing time to adjust to the NHL game. Might as well keep the core together for another year to make another deep playoff run.

Vancouver could use a RHD who can play a shutdown role, and stays healthy. With Tanev often injured, he can play a big role in Vancouver's top 4.

Détails additionnels:
I'm not a huge fan of moving assets at their lowest value, but Niskanen isn't quite working for the Caps right now.

Can definitely get a better return for Niskanen. Two 2nds is very doable, at the very least a 2nd and 3rd. Top 4RHD aren't easy to come by.

I think a 2nd and a 3rd is likely. Would love to get a late 1st or 2 2nd, but just see that as a hard sell with how Niskanen has played this year barring a big playoffs.

I think a 2nd/3rd round pick makes sense. I'm not sure how high his value is right now, but 2-3 round picks seem to be a good range for a return.

It definitely depends how much a team has scouted him. If BMac says in the summer that Nisky is available teams will probably be surprised and would be willing to dish out something nice to get him. But teams that are heavy on analytics might know he's no longer a top 4 minute muncher. He's still good but he needs to get more ozone starts.

Yeah in BMac we trust. I think the Orlov Nisky pair has really improved in last 10-15 games, so maybe his value will be higher than we think.

It seems like signing Vrana for 5 or 6 years instead of signing Burakovsky long term is the best way to go because Vrana has really proven himself a very good player and he is very valuable

Yep, I have him signed for 5 years here. I don't think Bura is an option for a long term deal until he comes out of his slump.

I really think you're overpaying Vrana here. I know he won't get a traditional "bridge deal" but he would take $4.0 x 4 years. He's way young still and has room to grow.

I totally agree. A lot of people keep signing him to long-term, big money contracts. I think a bridge deal is good. It saves money, and will prove he is worthy of a 5-6 mil contract.

He's a year older than McDavid who is the highest-paid player in the league

as stated they're both young players...on one hand McDavid has outscored the entire league and won hardware...plus he plays on a team that needed a bona fide star so they had to pay him ridiculously. Vrana can get a slightly better than bridge deal at his "age" and growing skill level.

I don't think 5x5 is an overpay for Vrana. You want to sign players long term generally right before they're worth that or more. It's always a bit of a gamble, but that's the way it goes. Everyone thought the Tom Wilson deal was insane, but looking at it nearly a season into it, and it actually looks pretty good. Vrana is a key long term piece for the Caps to have a continued competitive window, so I don't see why you wouldn't secure him for long term.
