He agrees to waive his NTC, gets traded to OTT after July 1st signing bonus is paid, OTT decides they'd rather keep him instead of buying him out. He retires?? Plays for OTT??

lol, rebuilding Ottawa gets a 40 year old player for one season, in which they are trying to tank and rebuild in exchange for losing the respect and trust of every other GM in the NHL.

You're right it can be bought out. So the other factor would be the full NMC, which means only way a move like this works is him wanting to retire and allowing Leafs to move him for cap relief.

no because when he is bought out and he becomes a free agent, and can sign a very team friendly deal. This is the stuff Pridham is made of!!! Marealu gets his new contract, and his salary from the buyout (so he likely ends up making more $ and staying with the leafs), just with a lower cap hit. This move takes a little bit of trust (relying on Ottawa (or whatever team) to actually buy him out) but I think it can definelty work!

It also costs Ottawa very little because of the way patties contract was structured and front loaded. His salary for the 2 buyout years would be under a million
