You guys doing Marleau trades is like me spending lottery money in my mind after I bought a ticket. At some point you realize you are wasting your time!

Maybe it happens. I dont know. Im offering two options.. Brown and Zaitsev or Marleaus contract gone. What is more realistic? The first one.. Im not wasting time. Its doable and if Capitals done it, it would be done again until next CBA is signed..

at the time grubauer had a lot of value, he was seen as getting a #1 goalie job in free agency.

    brown does not have value.

orpik also had cap hits of 2.5 million this year and 1.5 million next year with his buyout. according to capfriendly there is no cap benefit for buying out an over 35 player, so the team you trade him to will have his full 6.25 on their books this year. that is worth way more than connor brown

That's not true. Marleau's contract is structured to have lower salary actually paid in the third year. The salary paid in the third year is a lot lower than the cap hit. Teams like Arizona and Carolina love contracts like that so they can get to the cap floor without paying as much. His contract has some value to teams like that.

I get the point you are making. First off his cap hit was 5.5 and it would be 5.5mil this season if he isnt bought out. His salary was 2.5 and 1.5. which made that buyout to carry money on it for longer time, Marleau would be bought out and his cap hit 6.25 would be on that teams cap structure for 1 and only season and that team would NOT have to pay him a cent since his whole or almost whole of that contract would be paid on july 1st. Brown is very good player he just needs to play more, he is stuck on Leafs bottom 6 in defensive role. He played offensive role on 3rd line with Kadri and Komarov and put up 20 goals in his rookie season and then was put with JVR and Bozak to clear their defensive **** and that hurt him a lot in terms of scoring.. There are benefits for a team like New Jersey or Arizona to do this kind of deal because not all teams are going to pay for FAs and NJ isnt going to pay for that and they would use their rookies rather than signing big especially knowing that Hischier and Hall are up in a year..

weve done this before. every team has one or two players who had a fluke season with a high shooting percentage and slightly elevated playing time. In buffalo, it is girgensons who had 15 goals and 30 points in 61 games as a 20 year old. Then he was played where he belongs.

even if marleau was ok with all of this, it will cost you more than connor freaking brown to get a team to do this.

Sammy, I don't think it's that nice. IMO Kapanen is worth more than one year of Hamonic. And it really doesn't help the Leafs cap for next year.
Of all the teams to trade to....New Jersey? Dumas would have to have Marleau smoke 30 pounds of legalized Canadian weed in an hour to get him to waive his NMC. The only hope for Marleau cap relief is if Marleau decides to retire (which might happen).

lol.. if Marleau did that he would be more than retired.. wiser to hang em up and spread that 30lbs across the year

Not that I really object to anyone smoking 30 pounds in an hour, but it would be really sneaky way get Marleau to waive his NMC. Remember how the Kings got cap relief for Mike Richards? He was caught at the border carrying illegally prescription drugs. The precedent has been set. I always knew Lou had an "out" with Marleau's contract.

This seems to be a strangely realistic way out of the cap crunch. we should set an over/under to this..

Oh I know. I'm not saying they'd do it for free or anything. I'm just saying it's not impossible
