If the Oilers are trying to gun for the playoffs, here's a way the might do it without screwing themselves. It's a hedge your bets approach, so I was interested in not depleting our forward ranks further, but making organizationally sound moves like getting Puljujaarvi valuable AHL experience.

— Talbot needs to be cleared, and with Subban banged up Vegas might like a little insurance for their cup run. We get a prospect for the coffers and call up Montoya.

— Kassian has trade value, we have to recoup something for him. I pick Montreal who might appreciate what he brings to the playoffs.

— Chiasson and Benning are good enough players, but we need to hedge our bets a bit. Benning isn't a future top 4 defenseman so Petrovic fills the bottom pairing just fine. Chiasson won't re-sign here and did well in Washington last year. Burakovsky is floundering for Washington, so we make a hockey trade. Works with any pick really, a 3rd would be nice to get though.

— Spooner/Manning for Hagelin is a change of scenery move. We get to clear a bit of cap and they get some reclamation projects for their rebuild. Pick is conditional on Hagelin re-signing.
