With Duchene looking like he's going to resign in Ottawa, Hayes may be the top center available at the deadline. With multiple playoff teams needing a center (WPG, Carolina, Pitsburgh, MTL, Dallas, Colorado, etc) the price will get driven up. He will go to the highest bidder.
If WPG mentions Vesalainen the rangers should jump (only way is if Hayes is the best center available, which means duchene either resigns or is traded to another team)-- even it if means on taking Kulikov as a cap dump. That'll give them room to resign the FA, possibly including Hayes.
Edmonton is looking to go "all in" - this is definitely an all in move, shore up the defense with the addition of McQuaid who has been a steady presence on the rangers blue line this year. He blocks shots, defends the net well, sticks up for teammates, etc. Zucc gives them someone to help the top 6. He's done very well since coming out that trade speculation has kept him down (3g, 4a in 5 games since then). Gregoriev gives them a young netmider (he's only 22) to work with. Talbot is included to even out the cap.
Buffalo trade was from another post
Carolina trade is iffy. posts here seem to be down on fleury. Shattenkirk has picked up his game a bit since returning from injury which is encouraging. Essentially the trade is Kreider for Hamilton (carolina needs scoring and kreider is on a good contract for another year so he's not just a rental), shattenkirk makes up any deficiency and then some so fleury makes up the other difference.
Next year lines
(Ideally they could get either Hughes or Kakko, not including anyone just in case. I think Hughes will end up a winger due to his size, so either him or Kakko can replace Puljujarvi on the second line and rangers can get rid of Fast or Buchnevich). With potentially Buchnevich/Fast and vesey traded along with the buyout of kulikov, the rangers can potentially make another signing with all the cap space they will have, currently at 16m. I think they should also try to reuinite with Duclair if columbus doesn't keep him around (would replace nieves).
Panarin-Zibanejad-Kravtsov
Vesalainen-Chytil-Puljujarvi
Namestnikov-Andersson-Buchnevich
Nieves-Howden-Fast (they trade Vesey at the draft)
Skjei-Hamilton
Fluery-DeAngelo
Lindgren-Pionk (buy out kulikov)
for hayes we dont have to take back kulikov and the offer thats left should be whats roughly hayes will get without a resign guaranteed as well. You cant hold back so many salaries max 2 ongoing. Edmonton deal no point taking back talbot who's struggling and has a big cap hit with next years free agency crops. the carolina deal looks fair.

also, talbot was to make the cap work.. no other reason. also i added kulikov to prevent WPG fans from going ape sh1t that i went for Ves but I agree i think he could get Ves and a second

yeah i can see nyr taking a 1 year deal back but not 2 because of panarin and karlsson in the off season most likely being free agents and nyr pursuing both of them.

the purpose was to give WPG some cap space so they can sign FA next year--
Buyout of Kulikov saves 2.5m
Buyout of Staal Saves 2.8m
Trading Vesey and Fast/Buch saves minimally 4m (buch will likely get more than fast and may be worth more to another team so potentially more)
Talbot not resigning saves over 3m (sheshtyorkin will replace at 925k)
Cap increase will be at least 3m
We can trade Namestnikov and save 2-3m there.
With Hamilton i wouldn't go after karlsson. Both Fluery and Lindgren are defensive defenseman that can skate-- would work well with DeAngelo and Pionk. Ideally we could also pry Trouba from WPG in the offseason for Pionk and some picks (a 2020 1st or tampas 1st if they win the cup and maybe a 3 rounder). We'd have over 23 million in cap so Trouba+Panarin could make this team great with still 5-8m in cap to spare. We have Nils and Miller that would come over in a year or two (2020/21 season most likely) in perfect time for a cup run in Hanks last year (both would be upgrades over DeAngelo/Pionk and Lindgren)

From a Sabres fan, I give you five stars. Either Smith or Strome are worth a shot with a 4th or even a 3rd for a team looking for depth. What was the URL of the original Buffalo trade, were there any other comments about that trade? IMO, the Rangers would need to take a player to help balance the roster, but maybe this could work. Let's make a deal!
