Brassard has been struggling in 3C role there. Buff needs a 2C, mitts cant handle it all. Sobotka gives them a solid 3C that knows his role, a depth player and pick swap to offset value.

If Rutherford moves Brassard he is going to get a decent return for him, not cast-offs.

Just one thing to straighten out, sobotka is not in the top 6 of buffalo. He is either 3rd or 4th line in the lineup.

Financially I think that puts Pitt in a tighter spot. You're giving up a 2nd rounder, a bottom 6 guy and a career AHL'er for a guy who at one point in his career played in a top 6 role. I would be blown away if this trade showed up on the trade tracker.

Why would the Penguins be looking to sell? If you want Brassard, offer players that are actually NHL ready.
