Description
6 months ago, it would seem insane that the Blackhawks would take on a bad contract for picks, as they were desperate to shed Hossa's deal to make room for Schmaltz and Debrincat.

Given that Schmaltz has been traded and there is not RFA due a big raise next year, the Hawks can sit on one more year of Callahan in 2019-2020, taking on another first rounder in the process.

These moves leave the Hawks with just over $5 million in cap space. When you factor in Ward and Kruger leaving at the end of the season, plus the expected increase of 2 or 3 million, that would leave them with plenty of space (~13.5 million) for modest raises for Sikura, Forsling, Kampf, and maybe Perlini. Callahan's contract still leaves enough room to pick up a forward or potential Top 4 D in free agency.

Thankfully, this might also stop the Front Office from spending huge in free agency and adding more expensive contracts when they should focus on developing prospects.

You're selling way low on Anisimov. The guy is a perennial 20 goal scorer. He's alone worth a 3rd and maybe even a 2nd if you throw in the BOS 4th.

That Tampa trade isn't happening. The goal of acquiring picks for players doesn't mean picking up bad contracts too and that's $5M we can't use in free agency towards Panarin, Stone, Duchene, etc. Kunitz and Rutta are off the books this year, nobody even with a bad contract coming back, is going to give up a 1st and 3rd for ****ty rental players with one that should've retired.

Tampa has to get rid of Callahan. It's simply not an option. I think a first and third is too much, but it's not off by that much. Keep Kunitz and make it a second and third/fourth and you easily have a deal. Rutta should be able to take the 3 RD position away from Girardi. I'd also lower the pick going to Carolina. Chicago should retain on both Ward and Kruger and send them to playoff teams for 6/7th rounders. Hagel, Olofsson, Barratt, and Karushev should end up being top nine forwards and I'd not be surprised if three of them ended up being top six forwards. I don't think that it's a bad idea to spend on Panarin though. He's young enough to help solidify a group of veterans that will help transition prospects into the NHL. Chicago has an extremely deep prospect pool, and they tend to lack in the veteran department. Kane, Toews, Panarin, Keith, and Crawford is a good group that will keep you competitive and help develop young players. I think that Seabrook will need to go once Raddysh, Jokiharju, Mitchell, and Boqvist start needing roster spots though.

Why would one take on Callahan's contract for even a season for an end of 1st round pick? Which team did the Blackhawks a favor when they had to dump a contract, and took a 28 or 30th pick? It was Teuvo going with Bickell to Carolina, right?
If TBL is going to trade Callahan because they need the cap space, start with asking for Point and then when they decline go down the list from there and get a young middle six forward.
