Description
Step 1 Cullen retires. They can keep him on staff as a coach. He clearly doesn't need to be on the ice.
Step two, send off Brass and Sheahand. I do like Brass as a player, there is clearly talent there. But he's not worked out here. Even when he has performed well. He isn't on the ice enough, not sure whats up with that. However, he's a long term solution for a Dallas team that needs help at Center. Their 2C is 35 years old on the last year of a contract. Brass is 31 and can be that stop gap for 2-3 years while this team figures out what they are going to do at 2C over the longer term.
3rd is to get some help at RHD. The trade works for Ottawa. No one is sticking around on that team. Maatta while not perfect is signed long term at a reasonable cost and can help fix that locker room. That's a team that is going to have a hard time not only keeping their players, but also attracting new ones to play there. Bringing in a young defenseman who probably needs a new team to wake up is a good option.
The penguins get a guy who can be a 3rd RHD when Schultz gets back.

This team has problems getting the puck out of it's own end. That's on the defense and the bottom 6 centers aren't helping. Some of that is on Brass for frankly not being there, and Cullen and Sheahand simply aren't getting it done. Sheahand probably needs to be on a wing. Brass probably needs a place he can restart. He is just lost in Pittsburgh.
The only other move I can see coming is them unloading JJ. But I don't see how that is gonna happen till Seattle comes into the league.

why would that? Sheahand has 1 goal in 17 games. Brass simply hasn't done anything. He's a UFA that they probably won't resign at the end of the year.
It's a great trade.

While I do agree that Cullen needs removing, the Pens can't afford to shred their center depth like that. Faksa is almost 25 and has shown no sign of being anything more than an average 3rd line center who barely scrapes 30 points a season. Yeah he broke even on shot attempts with really bad deployment, but his goalies also had a .946 save percentage when he was on the ice. Faksa isn't a while lot better than Sheahan, who will look a lot better once he's not attached at the hip to Cullen.

Wideman is Ottawa's version of Chad Ruhwedel, so why would you give up Maatta for that? Wideman's averaging less than 14 minutes a night on his career, he doesn't move the puck or bring enough tangible offense to be worthwhile despite consistent power play time, and he's almost 29.

Brassard > Faska and adding Sheahan makes it even worse. I would take the deal if the Pens got a defenseman and maybe a pick out of it.

Maatta to ottawa is just as much a cap dump. Which is why I don't expect a great return. Just enough to be a 3RHD.
As for Sheahand, he's been playing on the 3rd line for some time now with decent line mates. His last game he had Gunz and Kessel next to him. I don't know how many more excuses you need but he's simply not getting it done.
While I do like brass, he's made of glass here in pittsburgh. If I can get something out of him that can do anything I'll take it. As a matter of fact, I think he'll put up better points with better 3rd line wingers.

Furthermore. the 4th line "depth" is just as fine with Angelo. Is there anyone who really believes Angelo could do any worse than 1 goal in 17 games?

Like I said, I think he's a good player. He's always hurt though. It's a recurring thing and my guess is he'll be right back. They should get him healthy and out the door while they can.

I know this was a week ago, but Wideman got traded for a 6th and Pharrow values Wideman more than the both of us so that might make him biased. I agree he's the Oilers version of Ruhwedel.

I would say cap dumping Maatta onto Ottawa for a RHD who could fill in while there is a need is a win, not over value.
I think the real issue is you value Maatta more than I do!

No, Wideman is a 7th defenseman on Ottawa (worst defense in the NHL) and Maatta has shown more than Wideman and he's 5 years younger. Wideman at best is depth guy not somebody in your top 4. Maatta would play way more than Wideman did in Ottawa. He played on average 14 minutes max.

one is a 1 million cap hit that ends this year. The other is a 4 million cap hit for 3 more years after this one.
By all means please take him. I will gladly make the trade. We can work with Wideman, but being as slow as a statue on the ice isn't a problem any coach can solve.
