What do the Pens look like today if they built the team via the draft and UFAs instead of trading away draft picks?

With the exception of the Barzal Trade (which got them David Perron) every trade Pittsburgh has made has paid off

3 cups in 10 years, I would say, 30% off the cups over the span of a decade is pretty impressive
capsin9 a aimé ceci.

The Brassard trade is looking like a bad trade the Reaves trade they lost the Iginala trade they lost and the Jordon leaopold and Fouglas Murray trades. But when I said that I was not talking specially bout the Pens more about all teams in the NHL deadline deals nearly never payoff.

I think the most interesting part is that despite a long history of taking D with early picks under Shero the Pens have actually used very few UFA/draftee D to win cups. Most of the team post-2010 is forwards acquired for D prospects and D picked up for a song from other teams.

Yeah, you're wrong.

Jerome Iginla scored 23 points in 28 games with the Pens, the 3 players they gave up have a combined 9 nhl points since the 2013 trade (how is this a loss?)
Leopold didn't contribute much, but what has Conner Brickley done again? nothing? (what exactly did we lose here?)
to early to say Brassard was a bad trade we'll see how he plays this season.
The doug Murray trade is insignificant, maybe tyler bertuzzi turns into a greta player, but doug murray wasn't bad at all when he was with the pens

So lets try looking at the Genius ray Shero steals

Perrron for Haglin was a Win
Goligoski for Neal and Niskanen was a big win
Bill Guerin was a steal, you could even lump Gary Roberts in there
Ryan Whitney for Chris Kunitz was a STEAL
a whole bunch of nothing for Hossa and Pascal dupuis was a MASSIVE STEAL (I did like Colby when he was here)
Staal (sad to see him leave) for Sutter and Dumoulin was a win
Sutter for Bonino was a Win
Phil Kessel was a flat out STEAL

Pens are always improving themselves with trades
