ferland was to just replace elias linholm since ferland is a 3rd liner and the prospect fox wasnt going to sign with calgary and was planning on walking so carolina took him as he had very little value without a contract because now he will probably walk on them. Look what nyr got for mcdonagh minus miller and namestikov because they were equal and now add more with a top prospect at the very least to have a crack at hamilton who is just turning 25 on an insanely team-friendly contract and is a right-handed defenceman which are extremely sought after,

Jones is a decent prospect. Carolina new owner is shipping out money look at the skinner trade they got nothing but picks. a 1st, 2nd, and 3 3rds is a ton for any player in the league ( Minus the mcdavids, EK Crosby group) especially one that seems to have a history in the dressing room, Boston and Calgary. and yes fox didn't have a contract Carolina doesn't make the trade unless they had a convo with him about signing. They are not building for now they are building for the future 3-4 years down the road.
