Additions of Svech, Necas, Hamilton, De Haan and hopefully a rebound season for Faulk and skinner(35 Goals?).. I dont see how thats not improved?.. As far as Defending, if everyone plays to their potential, Canes are top 5 for defense in the league.
So I have a question, most people seem to say Carolina has one of the best defensive cores in the league and Toronto has one of the worst. I hear this on a daily basis. So then why did Toronto allow less goals than Carolina? Is it just because Andersen is really good (If the Leafs defense is as bad as people say it is, he should have won the Vezina) or is what everyone says completely wrong?
Think the NHL is changing and what makes a defence good or bad is also changing. Speed is everything now and where once bigger defensive defenceman were valuable now fast guys make a huge difference. If you can attack the puck you force teams to dump and chase and if you have fast defence you are already turning up the ice before a forechecker can get there.
Now I'm just rambling. My point is, I think a lot of what people say and what you hear is just reputation and not much is based in actually facts.
Its like people that think shot metrics are the end all and be all. TO allowed more shots than most teams last year but they were also one of the best teams as far as high percentage scoring chance teams. Meaning they allow a tonne of shots but most aren't very good scoring chances. On an average night Toronto would be outshot 35-28 but when you look at high danger chances TO would have a 2-1 advantage.
