Description
I'm just trying to get into Dubas' head here with all this, there's a lot of talk about the Leafs pushing to sign Calvin De Haan I think if that happens you have to think the corresponding move is to ship out Gardiner who is in the final year of his deal and on a crowded left side and unlikely to fit the Leafs from a cap perspective going forward.

Martin won't be on this team on opening day. The Reeves contract shows that there is clearly still a market for guys like Martin (and Martin is actually still a useful 4th liner) and the Leafs can use that 2.5M to avoid any bonus overages going into next season.

*disclaimer, all contracts are all more or less based off of Matt Cane's contract prediction model. They are fairly accurate when it comes to UFAs slightly less so with RFAs (or Johnsson would be making close to league min on a 2 year deal like I have here)

The way this roster is constructed currently the Leafs at most would have a $1.3M cap carryover for next year and if you hit the longterm outlook tab a little over 15.5M in cap space next season to sign Marner and Matthews long term prior to Horton being placed on LTIR (about $21M in space when he is put on LTIR) before accounting for any cap growth.

Détails additionnels:
Leafs need a right handed defender, the Hurricanes need more than one left handed defender.

Faulk and Gardiner are almost the same player the only difference being their shooting hand.

For Carolina this also that much more attractive because they save over $2M in real dollars too (Faulk is owed $6M in base salary each of the next 2 years Gardiner is owed $3.65M now that his $400K bonus has been paid)

There might be some other smaller parts to this deal but its a fairly even trade 1 for 1 (talent wise) but if you want add one way or another.

Please explain how Gardiner is worse. Look up any stat you'd like and get back to me.

Thanks for including Horton. I do agree with above comment. Not that Faulk is great but his two years over Gardiner's one year and handiness might drive a harder bargain. You're right about Martin, strange how Babcock just stopping using him, because he is an NHLer. Grundstrom should be NHLer this year, I don't think Duclair could make the team. Wonder if the Leafs are going with newly signed Jurris at centre?

He’s a defensive liability. RHD are in more demand than LHD, making them more valueable. Him having more term is also more valueable.

Easy pass from Carolina

Our needs are Centers and RW, not "LHD"
(Hayden Fleury looked capable of stepping into second pair last year)

no way are we giving up one of our 2 strong trade assets to not fill a need

Again go look up those stats and see who the top 20 defenders over the last two years are at suppressing shots and see where Gardiner falls and where Faulk is.

Jooris looks destined for the Marlies. I think it's most likely another signing or taking a shot with Par at C first for the Leafs. Jooris is injury depth it seems.

Ok. Fine whatever. Even if Gardiner is a better dman than Faulk, the difference isn’t worth the extra 2 years term that Faulk has.

They have Fleury (who may or may not be ready) and one left handed defender who has seen regular nhl shifts on the left side (albeit one of the best ones) a LD is definitely a need for Carolina and everyone keeps missing the fact that Carolina is a budget team, saving $2.5M alone is a large incentive for teams like Carolina.

The bottom line savings they'd get is however. For hard budget teams like Carolina $2.5M in savings is worth more than a 1st round pick or did you not read about how they were trying to (and eventually did) find a GM willing to take the job at a salary that is lower than 90% of the assistant GMs around the league.

He said Fleury was ready for a top 4 role. Yes he played most of last season, but on the bottom pair. Is he ready for a top 4 role I dont know cause I'm not watching as many Hurricane games as you are clearly.

Fleury still has some room to grow but he could be Serviceable in the second pair (he's just a kid still)
(aside from the fact that CAR already been linked to Calvin DeHaan)

simple truth is bringing in Gardiner doesn't help us, it hurts us

it doesn't address a need and it wastes a valuable trade asset

better off moving Faulk to CHI, even if the return is only Anisimov
Ideally he goes to MIN for Nino
or in a perfect world Faulk+ to TOR for Nylander

But Gardiner is of no use to us

also our top D prospect Jake Bean is close to getting NHL time (Also a LHD)

Fleury and Bean's progress is what made Hanifin trade able (god that hurts to say)
Carpy22 a aimé ceci.

I was quite the fan of Bean when researching the 2016 draft so it's good to hear that he's coming along well. We have a difference of opinion when it comes to Fleury in the few games of his I caught, but if he is ready to step into a larger role than you're probably right that this is a lateral move that doesn't improve their team.

People really underestimate how good Nylander is (which may help in the contract talks) if it wasn't for some rotten PP shooting luck he'd be right there with Marner. The + in Faulk+ would be more than I'm sure most fans would be comfortably willing to pay.

Also the reason I even posted this was because the Leafs were linked to De Haan which meant Gardy would be the most likely candidate to go in a trade.

Probably doesn't get it done. Fox is by all indications looking to finish up at Harvard and become a UFA in a couple years so his trade value is minimal. They definitely wouldn't agree to a protected pick either.

I don't think the Gardiner for Faulk makes much sense from the Carolina standpoint, as people have mentioned in the comments why would they give up a valuable trade chip to address an area of strength (they have a very solid group of defensemen) , makes much more sense for them to seek a top 6 forward for Faulk.

Also I'm curios to the reason why you want to trade Gardiner? You say above that he Is a equal or an improvement over Faulk but then why do you (along with every other Maple Leaf fan on this site) want to trade him so badly? If you all seem to view him as this very solid top 4 defensemen what is the reason for trading him especially since your teams one weakness at this point is defensemen?
