Surplus of RHD

Description
Hawks trade for Faulk and take on a bad contract / project in Darling in return. Unfortunately Murphy is the odd man out in that Seabrook is absolutely unmoveable and RHD has Jokiharu and Mitchell waiting in the wings.

Jokiharu likely makes his way to the NHL sometime during the season and pushes out Rutta, who is traded at the deadline.

Top 6 remains as is unless Wahlstrom or Brady Tkachuk falls to #8.

If those forwards are gone, I expect the hawks to draft one of Hughes / Dobson / Bouchard / Boqvist. Personally I am a big fan of Hughes and think that he would make an excellent addition to the LHD pipeline.

I signed De Haan in free agency but this could just as easily be filled by Ian Cole or Forsling / Gustaffson if they impress in camp.

Good job overall. The changes I would make are;
1) Riley Nash isn't worth that. He's slow overall and his points were inflated this year. He's probably worth nothing more then $2.85M.
2) I would sign Hickey as the LHD for $3.25M or John Moore (Chicago guy) for $2.85M. I think De Haan coming off an injury is risk for the amount of money he is going to ask and I think NYI try hard to keep him.
3) Kahun, not sure the hawks should bring him up year 1. He needs to adjust to a NA sheet and the AHL is the place to do that. His bonus is huge if the Hawks bring him up so he becomes over a $3M cost and that bonus hits the cap space next year when Hawks need to resign Sikura and Schmaltz.
4) What about Duclair? I would take out either AA or Murphy in the Car trade and put in Duclair. Plus Car needs to retain more on Darling or Hawks aren't interested...Minimum of $1.35M.
5) Now either AA or Murphy are available to trade for a 2nd round pick.
6) Walhstrom is already committed to going back to college, he won't play this year.

These three changes should add another $2.7M+ to the cap space and you can look at grabbing a LW to replace Kahun. Maybe Neal for 4 or 5 years at $5.5M?

Totally understandable. Would you swap out Riley Nash for another 3C or just sign him to less money / term? The only other Centers I could think that would fit the bill would be Stasny (probably too expensive) or Derek Ryan

I would just sign Nash for less money. Stasny is going to be $5.5M but he's a 2c not a 3c and would only do that if the Hawks move Schmaltz to the wing.

1. I like the Carolina deal, but the Canes have a surplus of defenseman which is why Faulk is on the move.... Also, Canes fans are under the impression that Faulk has Erik Karlsson value (close to it).

2. The Hawks don't have to pay any team to take Hossa's contract when they cant spend his cap hit this summer... The Hawks should get a 2nd or 3rd round pick out of that Hossa contract.

3. Anisimov needs to be traded for a late first round pick or (2) second round picks.........Anisimov may get more. Look at what Shaw got, look at what Hartman got, Is Anisimov any less of a player than either of them?...... I think the return on Anisimov will shock many.

I'm not 100% on the details of Kahun's contract but there is some sort of European Assignment clause where he will likely head back to the KHL instead of playing in Rockford. His bonuses are pretty insane but the requirements to hit them are as well. The long and short of it is, if his bonuses exceed $4 million in Cap Space this team has, then it means he had an incredible year.

If Duclair isn't officially a "bust" by now he is getting very close. As such, I think his trade value is minimal. I'm not sure the extra $200k retained on Darling is going to move the needle either way.

I think an NHL Contract and the chance to bang home one-timers from Jonathan Toews may change his mind smile

I agree that without Kahun (or if he simply doesn't rise the occasion) there is a big hole missing in LW. Not sure that signing an aging Vet to a 4-5 year deal when Schmaltz, Debrincat, and others will need pay raises is such a good idea.

I think you may be overselling on trade value. That being said, if you are right, then I will drive AA and Hossa to the airport myself, free of charge.

With Kahun, his age of 22 has surpassed that rule. He can play in the AHL as it is age limited.

Duclair isn't a bust. Look at his first season in AZ when he put up over 40 points. Then the following season he asked to be traded and AZ didn't and they benched him and benched him for most of the season afterward then traded him of course to the Hawks. I think he learned his lesson in AZ, but the Hawks bounced between him and Hino. Given the right environment, he's 22 and will prove to be a solid 3rd liner if not 2nd liner.

Walhstrom has already committed, he can't change his mind just like that. You don't commit and go to the draft then change your mind as that lowers your draft value. Never know, but he will likely be another Sikura...play another year in college and might be brought up at the end of next season.

Relying on Kahun, who will be 23 next month, to break out to solidify a 3rd pairing is a big gamble when he's never played on a NA sheet. By doing so, you then have to hope Sikura develops into a true 2nd line goal scorer in his first season. Double gamble. Put Kahun in the AHL, Sikura on the other wing of Hino as a 3rd pairing, and bring in a proven goal scorer. Saad crapped the bed last year for goal scoring and we never found a solid winger to play along with Kane, Saad and Cat. We need to fill that hole and can't count on Sikura, Kahun or Hino to be that role, especially if Saad doesn't perform again.
