You said justin holl who has played 2 NHL games by age 26 is better.
Let me clarify, Petry would have to come to TO in a trade. And with his cap hit and age and skill level, I wouldn't touch that unless Montreal was giving him away as a cap dump. Holl looked not bad in his 2 game call up last year and is one of the top defenders on the best team in the AHL. (That can't be argued) Holl will be less than a million dollars on a 1 or 2 year contract and is right handed. Why not give him a shot on the bottom pairing. Especially if they move Gardiner somewhere, pick up Tanev or Myers to play with Reilly and then move Hainsey to the left side of the bottom paring. TO also has that russian guy and Carrack. All of those options are younger and way less expensive than Petry who I think is a bottom pairing defenceman in a best case scenario. (Best case for the team he's on, not him. He's extremely valuable as a 2-3 million dollar veteran bottom paring guy.) But as a 5+ 2nd or top paring guy, he's just not good enough for that.
The original argument was Petry for Reilly which is an insane thought. Its not even close.
