Why each team does this:

CGY gets a top line LWer who scored 30G as a rookie, a middle 6 PK guy who's defensively responsible and a 1st round draft pick for Hamilton where CGY is flush at D but needs some scoring help
TOR moves their late 1st (using past 10 years data about 50% chance that pick can be an NHLer and 5% chance that player is top 9 worthy) for a RHD with conditional 1st next year based on if he is re-signed. Get a top 4 RHD without having to give up any of their young talent.
COL is 7M short of the CAP floor, needs a solid back up goalie, and has 1 contract to sign. Mason likely has a great bounce back year (contract year and likely last contract year) so has everything to prove. Plus he can't be as unlucky as last year. Worth the risk for a 6th round pick
MTL will miss out on Tavares and Stastny and doesn't have the pieces to get a top 6 C which little still is. Also at that cost of a 2nd and 4th it's nothing for 6 years of Little.
EDM needs a RHD that can handle top pairing and PP unit. Buff is a Chiarelli kind of player and if he's going to pay for a RHD with some term Buff could be that candidate. They still have to make other moves but Buff was a beast last seasons/playoffs with no signs of slowing down. The vet leadership/physicality he brings can't be matched.

WPG side of things:

EDM- Flush at RHD and Buff value will never be higher after last season. Need the CAP releif if they want to sign Stastny and they love drafting and developing. This deal is predicated on the Hamilton deal though because they need him as the replacement at RHD.
CGY- Hate trading Kyle Connor but Puljujarvi from EDM keeps them flush at wing, replaces Buff, and they have too many wingers so Armia is expendable as well.
COL- Need the CAP relief and don't want to pay an asset to get it so a 6th is better then nothing
MTL- Need the CAP relief and MTL needs a C.
TOR- Trouba-Hamilton is solid RHD and the CAP space from Myers move is what's needed more as a third pairing D with a CAP hit of 11M is too much. Kulikov with his injury last year would have other teams disinterested and with many teams looking for RHD Myers is the easy choice.

All said and done it's a lot of moving parts but in the end WPG gets what it needs to remain competative and have the available CAP space to re-sign all their key RFAs and room for Wheeler whos UFA after next season.
