Honestly I'd rather Carlson than Faulk. Get a more reliable backup, like maybe Jon Gillies in a Grubauer trade. Also Beagle can re-sign at 2M and Kempny wont be more than 1.3 ish. Also Wilson will probably be around 3-3.5 and Gusev probably won't come over, as well as the other 2 you created besides Samsonov

I'd rather throw 2 years $4.5mm at Mike Green than give up Grubby and two picks for Justin Faulk.

What’s your take on Joel Persson? Is there talks about him signing? I know he was nominated for rookie of the year in the SHL, but is a late bloomer already being 24.

Persson is unsigned and undrafted. Has 34 points in 51 games as a 24 year old in SweHL. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=208322

That's twice as many as C. Djoos had as a 20 year old: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=152764

It's impressive, but does that give him a higher career ceiling than Madison Bowey, who played on the Canadian team in the WJC, and has 12 NHL points at 23? Definitely worth adding some depth at right handed defense, and who knows who might have better positioning, or checking skills... but if Persson is waiver exempt and Bowey isn't, Persson will have to play significantly better than Bowey to start the season in Washington, rather than being the first injury call up.

From a team perspective I like the idea of addressing a need with an outstanding rookie. Sometimes late bloomers are guys who have worked hard to improve their weaknesses, and in the end that's a skill they can keep using to improve. I just disagree with the depth chart.

But to recap the best part of this thread:

Pius Suter has a point a game in Switzerland at 21. www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=170175

I tried to look up and see how other NHL forwards played in the Swiss A league.

Turns out, they didn't.

On hockey DB, Sven Baertschi and Sven Andrighetto came over to North American junior teams from the B league, while Niederreiter came over without playing even in B.

It seems like swiss major pro hockey is pretty much not scouted by the NHL. Probably worth sending someone to watch some games and take some notes. The one game I've gotten to see of Austrian pro hockey wasn't bad... not amazing, but maybe a bit above ECHL level.

I'm intrigued by the idea of the Caps being the first to sign someone out of a league no current NHL forward has played a game in. But I'm totally not on board with trading Lars Eller on a team friendly five year contract that takes him through all of his prime years in order to make room for him and Beags. Massive nope there.

I suggested trading Eller for Jonathan Frickin' Toews at half price this morning, and suddenly the internet's exploding with Eller trades? Stop. Just stop.
