This makes sense for both teams. I know that with this trade, Anaheim gets older, but they get a righty to get paired with Hampus Lindholm, also with some veteran experience for that playoff run. For Colorado's end, they get a top lefty role with John Carlson. They also get a younger defenseman that can potentially get a career year if he plays on the top pair with Carlson.

Why doesn't Anaheim just spend the extra $2/season on the much better player in Carlson, and cut out the middle man (This would also be a waste of money). They've already got 2 pretty solid RHD's in their top for in Manson and Montour. Lindholm, Manson, Fowler, Montour. Not a bad top 4.

Buy out the 2nd best center, trade the best defenseman (not actually that bad, but no way either team actually does it), re-sign the two worst choices...one for 3x his actually value, the other for double.

I guess signing Carlson isn't the worst thing, though it does kind of block Timmins and/or Makar down the road. The Nieto signing is good. Maroon is OK I guess, but overpaid at $3.5M.

Overall, 1 star. You can do better

The second best center had a super decline in points and is making 4 mil. It makes sense to buy him out.
