Draft Day Prep

Équipe: 2017-18 Canadiens de Montréal

Description
NOTE: This is not intended as an Opening Day roster. It is meant to get as many good picks and prospect in place and the have about $15M of cap for some potential UFAs or sudden cap dumps by other teams:

1) Pacioretty to the Islanders who want to show they're serious about keeping JT happy (room for cap to be retained). McCarron and Dal Colle are sawed off as busts.

2) Habs take Bobby Ryan and a decent prospect from Ottawa for Alzner and Byron. This is a pure cap play for Ottawa and a shot at redemption for Ryan. If it's not working out, Habs can take 50% of the salary and trade Ryan onward. Either way, Ottawa gets the flexibility to sign Karlsson and Duchene.

3) Stuck in neutral, the Coyotes have loads of prospects and few consistent players. Chucky for Strome is a gamble by both teams, but a smart one for both. Giving the nod to Strome's upside, Habs add Poehling, who projects as a 2 or 3 centreman, much as MacInnis does. Coyotes get a plug-and-play young talent with something to prove.

Man, I thought having $9M in unused cap was a problem.

Not a Strome fan, so don't like the Chuky trade. Patches ... sure. It's good.

Bobby Ryan? That is a swing for the fences. Ottawa would be nuts not to take that, but it also could make the Habs a lot better, esp if they get a centre like Stastny or Bozak.

This ARZ trade... So disgusting to look at. Poehling alone can fetch Dylan flop Strome... And then you add our best forward this year...

Arizona trade is terrible. Our best prospect plus a winger like chucky... I get what you're shooting for, picking up two young centers, but that's rough. Ottawa trade is interesting, Islanders trade I would be happy with. 2.8/5 just cause of the ARI trade.

Strome is still a baby. I also think that what's missing most for the Habs is a centre with good hands and offensive instincts. Strome's an underwhelming skater, but if he gets it together, he's the 80 pointer we don't have. I like Chucky, but I can't keep waiting for him to throw his father out of his life and start being a take-charge pro. Poehling should be a fine player, but a 40 or 50 pointer if we're lucky. He won't be a McCarron, but he could be a JDLR or Eller.

Poehling produced at a higher rate in the NCAA than Mittelstadt... A top offensive prospect. Ryan is fast, he's excellent in the faceoff circle, he's able to get unbelievable assists and he's already a leader in his team perhaps the fact he's the youngest ^player in his division. Strome has more chances to end like his brother than like a Staal 2.0.

Hockey news still has Strome ranked as the #5 overall prospect in the league. #1 to #4 are Mittelstadt, Elias Pettersson, Heiskanen and Cale Makar. Chucky and Poeling probably wouldn't land any of those. So shooting for Strome on a team that isn't getting any better despite having all this youth, didn't seem that crazy. The ISS Scouting Book says:

    Size/Strength -- Excellent
    Skating -- Average
    Puck Skills -- Elite
    Shot -- Excellent
    Offensive Play -- Excellent
    Defensive Play -- Good
    Physical Play -- Good
    Competitiveness -- Very Good
    Hockey Sense -- Excellent

    Strengths:
    1. Vision and creativity
    2. Magic hands
    3. Pro shot

    Weaknesses:
    1. Average skater with average speed
    2. Defensive zone play

We Montrealers have a very bad habit of falling in love with our prospects and they almost never work out. The Darcy Tuckers, Mike Keanes and Brendan Gallaghers are wonderful surprises, but the Habs haven't drafted a decent forward with a first or second rounder in more than a decade. Chucky was the best in a bad draft, but he's really not a difference maker of any sort in Montreal. Scherbak might turn out OK ... might. McCarron is an absolute washout, JDLR and Collberg never came close to achieving what was supposed to be their promise and ... dare I say it .. Louis Leblanc remains the bitterest of pills. So forgive me if I can't get too excited about yet another overhyped college player. I am sure he'll be a good NHLer, but I am not expecting miracles.

We should stick to what we're good at: drafting defencemen and developing goalies.
