You're overpaying for young importantish players off non-playoff teams that don't want to give them up and aren't that interested in the older guys they're getting back.
It's a cliche that old, accomplished guys get traded to good teams for young guys with a potential. That's because so often, that's mutually beneficial. Then you also have to look at positional need. Calgary and Montreal both need a #1 center. Bennett has equal value to them each.
Not sure I agree with you for a number of reasons... So lets start with overpaying for young important players....
The only trade I can see you talking about in this context is Sam Bennett or maybe Max Domi. Either way, I don't believe these are overpayments.
Let's start with Bennett: The guy has 26 PTS the last two seasons, and has basically shown he will be, at max, a second line centre. Giving Calgary two decent picks to restock their depleted arsenal, plus Andrew Shaw at a 2.9 cap hit for a couple more years, should be enough to get Bennett. I think he would fit well in MTL in a third line role.
The ARZ trade is pretty simple. MTL is giving up 2 A-Prospects, a high pick, and giving ARZ a bad contract for Domi and Stepan (Another expensive contract). I think Stepan is a nice add for that second line.
So that's my thought process.... Oh, and the CGY MTL need a #1 centre and bennett being that is a nonononono
