Wish there was a 2.5 star option. I don't like the O'Reilly/Risto/Parayko trade. Blues are giving up lots of youth and a first rounder. It breaks down to

Allen+Gunnar for Lehner
Parayko for Ristolainen
Kostin, Thompson, and 1st for O'Reilly in my eyes.

Like I said previously, O'Reilly is a younger version of Stastny and more expensive. Why not just resign Stastny and save a few million bucks in cap space if JT doesn't work out(which it won't work out for the Blues)?

Alright so ur saying we should base ROR trades on the Stastny trade? Is that ROR’s value?

I believe I saw Stastny does not really want to resign here. And I also believe that ROR is a better version of Stastny. Averages around 60% of faceoffs while putting up more point totals. Preference is Tavares but it is hard to see him coming here when we only have 3 top 6 players. Not sure of Ristolainen would fit better than Parayko but I am willing to try it. Allen's streakiness kills the blues for weeks at a time and we cannot waste weeks of a season

TBH, if a trade is a good for both sides it should be a 2.5 star lol. I think this checks out

Not saying that since he does have term on his side. I'm just saying he's the same player with a higher price tag. Yeah he's younger, but he's not much better.

ROR was an elite possession C to this past season FWIW. Younger with term and a rising cap. I think he’s better than Stastny.

I just don't see it in his game where he's better than Stastny. He's a very good 2c, but Blues don't need another 7+ mil 2nd line center for 4 years. They need a first line center. As good as Schenn looked, I still wouldn't call him a true number 1, but he's the closest they've had in years

Actually they've put up similar numbers in their careers until Stastny came to St. Louis where he was put in a defense first system instead of the offense driven Avalanche system. Stastny came here in his age 28 season, O'Reilly is entering his age 27/28 season. Since they are similar players with similar stats at this age point, It's reasonable to say O'Reilly will put up similar numbers here. 40-50 points. He's not that much better. It's just like 4 years ago when the Blues signed Stastny to a deal at age 28, except we'd have to give up young assets to receive that number 2 center.

I have read most STL fans believe Allen is about equal to Lehner, I agree. Is Gunnarsson an add on or a partial salary dump? IMO he is more of a dump. So Sabres adding just a bit too much.

Parayko for Ristolainen.

At 1st I thought this trade was heavily favored to Buffalo, but maybe is a about fair. Both RHD, 23 v 24 YO, Ristolainen scores more but is not real strong in the defensive zone, I do not know about Parayko's defensive capabilities, but I will still call this one about equal.

Kostin, Thompson, and 1st for O'Reilly in my eyes.
I would make this trade from Buffalo point of view. Kostin is 18 yo and playing against full grown men in the AHL and is doing very well, I think he is going to be a top 6 forward, Thompson is 19 YO and needs more time in the AHL to develop. TBH I just want to move O'Reilly and this is a fair offer.

OK here we definitely disagree, Stastny's best years are way behind him, O'Reilly has been very steady his entire NHL career and I think he will have better years than he has had in Buffalo someplace else.

That's the kicker. Stastny isn't as good as ROR, but if Pauly wants to come back for 3 yrs x 5.5m, that is better value than losing Dunn/Parayko to add O'Reilly.

Don't disagree on Stastny's best years being behind him. That happens when a player hits his 30s. However, Stastny has been solid his whole career as well. They've put up similar numbers their whole career. Blues got Stastny in his age 28 season when he switched to a defense first system. His PPG didn't drop significantly but they did drop. O'Reilly is very much the same. Puts up similar points per game in his career, he'd be entering his age 27/28 season in a more defense centric system. It's almost deja vu if you're a Blues fan.

He's not as good as ROR at this point in his career. But age 27 Stastny was just like age 27 ROR in terms of numbers. Blues would be getting what they got when they first signed Stastny, but at a higher price point factoring in salary plus assets

ROR can b a #1 C with his great Two-Way game, and if u retained his contract, he could get u a great value.

If Buffalo would be willing to retain. However; Blues would be getting the same player as when they signed Stastny 4 years ago, but have to give up assets in order to get him unlike when they signed Stastny and just had to sign him off FA

Technically, I think ROR is less in terms of % of cap but yeah, the assets lost in a trade would make it pretty incomparable.

ROR's numbers on a really bad BUF team are expected to be lousy. It's hard to compare the two, but I think if you're saying the expectations we had for Stastny 4 years ago would be about equal to the expectations we'd have for ROR now, I'd agree with that.

Maybe they dont use this trade then. I say wait to see who gets Stastny in FA, and maybe a team that was disappointed they didnt get him decides to trade for ROR (if Buf is willing to retain, then it could happen if necessary).

That's exactly what I'm saying. looking at the numbers side by side through their age 28 seasons may be the most similar of any 2 centers in history. They play a similar two-way style, average about the same PPG to this age point in their careers, put O'Reilly in a defense first system, it's reasonable to expect he'd put up about 50-55 points in an 82 game season.
Ii like ROR, but don't want to give up assets for Stastny 2.0 if that makes more sense.

Maybe it’s time we switch from a defense first system then. Yeo needs to adapt to the players we have. It’s ridiculous that we have Tarasenko, Schwartz, Schenn and no one puts up a 70 point season. I know Schwartz was injured but still.
