Future Leafs Retaining All Major Players

Créé par: DanDanBanan
Équipe: 2019-20 Maple Leafs de Toronto
Date de création initiale: 17 févr. 2018

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Attempting to retain JvR, Gards, Marner, Nylander, and Matthews, using homegrown talent in the future.

This team hinges on complimentary player growth. Johnsson needs to be as defensively storng as he was in the minors. Lilj needs to develop his defensive game. Aaltonen needs to improve his faceoffs. Marleau needs to LTIRetire in his last contract year, probably to take a coaching job with the Leafs after.

Grundstrom may make Komarov redundant. Korshkov as well. Martin might end up traded at some point to free up cap

It gets more and more hilarious every time I see another one of these.

Now I know Matthews>Marner/Nylander>Kadri but when you look at the salaries - 11 > 6.5/6.25 > 4.5.... in what world is Matthews worth two and a half times as much as Kadri and Kadri's salary more than Marner and Nylander?

Everyone bases their numbers off of Eichel (who is inferior to Matthews) and McDavid (who is superior) but ignores the rest of the league..let alone the rest of the Leafs.

To be fair, Kadri signed his deal before his big breakout with the leafs, and he didn't sign a seven or eight year deal. Kadri in 2015 is absolutely worth just under half of Matthews; now the gap is bridged greatly (if he signed now it would be 6-7 million)

You do have a point, but that isn't really how negotiation are based on. Matthews will compare to Eichel and Toews. Leafs will compare to Bergeron (and say Matthews isn't as good. Nylander, will probably be based on Pasta even if Nylander gets less. Just because Marchand gets 6.124 doesn't mean Nylander will get 5m. You can bridge the stars for a lower price, but that means they might be leave four years after their ELC end, or do you want them stay long term past their first eligible dates as UFAs.

Both our points are only small parts to the negotiating process and it changes from team to team, year to year. A team with depth and Cup aspirations will go about the process differently than one without and taking into account the players on their own team is as important as comparing to others league wide.

You have to admit that when you look at the numbers on the team, Kadri for instance, compared to Matthews, last year they were 8 goals/points apart and now coincidentally they're $8M apart in salary. It is flat out hilarious and defies logic.

You're right it defies logic. It's kinda strange we have the same "unfair" bonus payout in private companies. A group of "slugs" make $40,000. There is a company bonus plan if the company makes a profit and other factors the group of slugs can make up to 10% extra or $ 4,000. Now a director makes $. 400,000. OK that's fair. But he why is entitled to 25% bonus or $. 80,000. Shouldn't he just be entitled to the the just 10% also in group company bonuses?
I was on both sides, and maybe I'm a more socialistic Canadian. I always thought that company bonuses should be shared among all employees more fairly, if a company decides to go the company bonus profit sharing route. Hey, sorry for the rant.
