The Answer Was Always In The System

Description
It may just be a small sample size, but Travis Dermott looks like he is going to be a very good defenceman. Lets just drop all the talk about trading Marner & Nylander for OEL because the pieces we need to be good are already in our system.

It's actually been 9-10 games for Dermott and he's looked great in those games!

What I don't get is "maybe the answer was in our system" then we trade a lefty D for a Lefty D...??? That makes no sense...

Have you ever seen Logan Stanley play? I highly doubt the Leafs would be interested in him for that price. Not sure that Stanley will ever become a top-4 and word is that the Jets are not so happy with his development in the OHL. If you are looking for a big body like that, I think the Leafs would prefer Phillipe Myers from the Flyers.

The reason I did this was to make cap space for re-signing JVR and possibly acquiring a two-way center via free agency. It also opens up a roster spot on D. If you notice I also included Winnipegs 2018 1st round pick as part of the deal.

So you give up Gardiner to keep JVR (who has literally 1 skill of standing in front of the net and tipping the occasional puck in) and Stanley who hasn't really lived up to the hype? I don't think that's wise. Gardiner has been phenomenal the last couple of weeks with Rielly out. He's really stepped up and played to what everyone thought he'd be.
