Why do you think JVR will only take a 3 year deal? Right now is his prime years to cash in. Use Oshie as the model for JVRs next contract.

Unfortunately, JVR will not take a 3 year deal considering the age at which he is hitting UFA status - that could be detrimental to his career if he gets injured or has a couple of bad seasons. I suspect he will get a 6 or 7 year deal and will not be resigned by the Leafs.

I think the Leafs would be foolish to spend that much on Carlson IF they plan on keeping Jake Gardiner around. It would be much more worth it, in my opinion, to hold out and see what the defenseman UFA pool is like next season with potentials like OEL, Doughty and Karlsson hitting the market.
