Description
This can work, especially if get rid of a few contracts summer of 19. I’ve done the math, and if remove Marleau (robidas island), and cap goes up a bit, can pay Matthews 13, Marner 7, and Gardiner 6 and use young guys on D, and just have 4th liners to sign or call up. Will work.

It would if cap goes up even at low end of Bettmans estimate. Look in my explanation.

As I say, Robidas Island. He’ll be told he’s injured like lupul and robidas were. The contract was structured that way deliberately so that he’s only earning a bit over 1 million the 19/20 season. Bob McKenzie et all said when he signed that it was really a massive 2 year deal and that he will retire after 2 years. 3rd year for cap purposes only.

Silly to think Marleau is going to LTIR himself when he has a change to win a Cup. He left his home in California for reason, to play that third year with a contender, not to satisfy the Leafs cap situation. Either way his cap hit is 6.25m regardless his actually salary. That is the cap works, not so guys can post rosters with Tavares on their team.
And the cap doesn't really work. If the Leafs are to have no performance bonus carryover in 2019/20 when they really need all space availabem they have to include that 4,55m that is shown above in the 2019/20 cap. It isn't now. Also Horton's 5.25m salary has to be included in the opening day roster, or else the there isn't room to include the bonus performance for 2019/20. And even if Marleau was LTIRed his salary has to included in the opening day roster for performance bonuses reasons.
And as suggested by others, how do you cut salary in 2019/20 when Marner, Matthews and other expect raises.
Sorry, when following the cap rules and expectations, having Tavares even at a low end of his salary expectations, doesn't work for the Leafs.

On the open market John Tavares will easily command around $11 million to $12 million per he's not coming home to Toronto to play 2nd fiddle to Auston Matthews. It's been widely reported that if Taares goes to free agency he wants to go to a team where he can be a #1C not happening in Toronto. Matthews 13M Marner Nylander 7M each Tavares 12M good luck not being in cap hell for the foreseeable future. If you're going to spend million more do it upgrading your D not spending more money on your forward core.

I’ve done the math. It works. And I trust BobbyMac more than you about Marleau. 76.45 million in 19/20 including everything I’ve said, and need 5 players. Even without clearing out the Horton hit as you insist is ‘necessary’. It isn’t.

Sorry to be correct , if he Marleau retires, the Leafs still has his cap hit of 6.25m in his third year. That is the meaning of plus 35 signings, so rich teams can't front load contracts and have minimum cap implications in the future.
That's what happened with Datsyuk.
Now I admit that if Marleau truly retires, the Leafs would be able to trade his cap hit with sweetener to "not near the cap team".

Again, he’s not going to officially retire. He will go to Robidas Island where he is ‘injured’ and still gets his salary but has minimal cap ramifications. But could easily trade his hit with a prospect to Arizona or the like.

Fits no problem with an 82 million cap in 19/20, which is a low estimate according to Bettman.
