Description
Nieves is a bottom six forward, reliable, not anything flashy but does the right things. Strome was sent down yet again, bringing his original ceiling into question. While Nieves wont light it up like Strome has the potential to, he does provide a solid depth option in the bottom six with his speed and versatility. Throw in a bottom pairing defenseman/ahl defenseman and a second round pick.

If this offer doesn't do it I would consider trading Vesey but idk if i would include a pick since Vesey is an NHL player rn

Rangers depth down the center would mainly be

zibanejad
Hayes
Miller
Chytil
Strome
Andersson

with hayes, miller, chytil and andersson also able to play the wing if needed

They aren't "Giving up on him", they're sending him down to get more ice time. Nobody is moving a 20 year old, former 3rd overall pick for random throwaways.

Look at his AHL numbers. Kid just needs to play.

I agree with they won't just throw him away, but eventually we have to think and see that he isn't as good as advertised.

Anyone can be a good minor league scorer.

Some guys cannot convert their number to the big leagues.

I do expect Arizona to explore options with him. As a third overall pick he should've been in the NHL last year, but couldn't stick around.

We shall see what the future holds for Strome, but it appears as if he may not be as good as we all thought

AHL doesn't always translate to the NHL. It would be stupid not to reevaluate his value to the orginization. In terms of "random throwaways" nieves is a cost controlled middle six potential forward that already fills a role in the NHL as a depth player that can play wing or center, kill penalties, etc. he has 4 more points in only two more games than strome. He has legit speed, he can keep up with grabner. He still has room to grow as a player just like strome does. I'm not saying their potential is the same i'm just talking in numbers. stromes potential is why I added the pick and a 3rd line/ahl defenseman because although he won't make a major difference, he's an asset (teams still get income from ahl teams).

Yes strome was drafted at #3, but has yet to have a successful stint in the NHL. If you look back at the draft he was picked in, he wouldn't have been number three knowing what we know now. Getting a second rounder in a very deep draft in 2018 is a huge plus.

You've gone from Nieves being a bottom six forward, to "cost controlled middle six potential that fills a depth role", which is a fancy way of saying that he's a 4th liner. You don't trade a 20 year old guy with elite potential for a guy who might play in your middle six, a 7th dman and what will likely be a pick at the bottom end of the second round. 29 other GM's see that trade and laugh.

Again, he's 20. He has pretty great potential. He's putting up numbers in the AHL. Why not let him get seasoned then call him up full time when he's ready?

Nieves is a bottom six forward that fills the fourth line right now.. his potential is a middle six forward with him most likely being a third line forward. My point being is if strome cant translate his game to the NHL he's not elite.. just look at pavel brendl, he also was a "elite talent" when he was in the WHL putting up a ton of points, but it just didn't translate professionally. i completely agree he needs more time, but if you look at the title of this, it's "if arizona has given up on him". Just off statistics, Nieves has been the more successful one SO FAR. I don't think that will be the case in a few years
