The Penguins have recently been linked to Howard. Unless the deal includes Murray, which is highly unlikely, DeSmith will have to be included as they would lose him on waivers anyways. Since Detroit needs to retain 50% of Howard's salary to make the trade work, they will receive a second round pick. Hopefully, adding a veteran netminder will recreate the dynamic they had with Murray and Fleury by taking pressure of Matt's shoulders.

The Hurricanes lack depth down the right wing and are pretty set on defense, which makes it easier for them to part with van Riemsdyk who likely will leave in free agency after next season. To make the trade happen, the Penguins trade down two rounds, similar to the Ryan Reaves trade.

The Canadians quite possibly have a worse defense than the Penguins. For fun, lets hypotheses that they fall out of playoff contention. This trade will give them a young defenseman and forward for the future.

The Bellemare trade was really just to keep Grant and Cullen out of the lineup. He's a solid role player and penalty killer.
