Description
Marner's contract is based on a combination of Pastrnak and Draisaitl's contracts. I raised the value from 7.5 to 8 to fit the change in the cap ceiling. Then I adjusted it to fit Marner's skill level, and I came out with 10.5. I took a 1 million discount and came out with 9.5.

Matthew's contract was based off Eichel, Draisaitl, and McDavid's contracts. After coming out with 10.3 million, I added the cap inflation to end up with 10.75. I adjusted the average skill set to Matthews and came out with 12.45. I took off a 995K discount to get 11.5 million.

Kapanen's contract was based off Kase, Mantha, and Connor Brown's deals. I averaged them to get 2.75, inflated it to 3 million, adjusted to Kapanen's skill and got 4.5 million. I took a big discount and gave him 3.125 million.

Andreas Johnsson's deal was based off Vesey, Hyman, Bennett, and Ritchie's. After the average, inflations, and skill adjustment I came out with around 3 million and gave him a discount to get 2.25 million. He will be playing with Kapanen, or possibly Nylander, though not likely, so his numbers should actually improve. I'm being really relaxed about this one.

Sparks basically has Domingue's contract. Ozhiganov's was based off Sustr and Petrovic, and Leivo's was based off Byron, Tanev, Watson, Scott Wilson, Nordstrom, and Paquette. It's probably better for Toronto to let him walk and bring up Grundstrom.

I gave all these players discounts, and accounted that Kapanen, Marner, and Matthews would all majorly slump during the season. Still, they are over by 7.2 million on the opening day, and 2 million after that. Their right D is weak, and there will be increased pressure on Zaitsev. Ozhiganov has not been playing over 18 minutes a game for a long time, so their will be pressure on him as well. We have no idea how either Liljgren or Lindgren will respond to a full time NHL role. Gardiner walked, so again, there will be big shoes for Dermott to fill and Borgman/Rosen/Sandin will have a full time roll and who knows how they'll respond. This is an average D with a lot of question marks, and goodness knows how they'll perform if Zaitsev or Reilly gets injured. The time for Toronto to win is now unless they trade a big piece next offseason.

Well done and thought out. Toronto is going to have to move a high priced piece in order to get under the cap and improve the D. This D is not winning a cup.

All the contracts seem realistic except Johnsson, he is less than 2 million(he is a rookie afterall). Either a Nylander or both Kadri and Brown trade combo's are the most likely scenario to help the Cap issue. Ideally trade Marleau back home to San Jose, but that's not happening.

Matthews wants McDavid money and Marner wants Eichel money. Doubt either backs down. So you're a tad under on both. And you're currently over the cap.

That was on purpose. I was proving that no matter what they’d end up over the cap next year, forcing them to trade a big salary. Also, I mentioned that all of the contract numbers were after subtracting a discount. Marner is worth 10.2 and Matthews is worth 12.7 so they are right in wanting those numbers. I was simply applying hypothetical discount and making up a best case scenario for the Leafs.

So was Hyman, and Bennett/Vesey were second year players. He’s on track for slightly over 30 points, and that isn’t worth the money I gave him as an RFA, but keep in mind that this contract will probably take him to unrestricted free agency barring a bridge deal, so he’ll either want term or money.
