Having played hockey the problem with Sprong is really obvious.
He's not strong on the puck. Because of that he doesn't get the chance.
He needs to gain weight and add strength. He's a young 21. He needs to develop, not on the skill side but in the gym and finish filling out.
He's listed at 180lbs...I'd say that's generous. He really needs 1 or 2 years to keep adding to his weight so he's got the strength in his legs and upper body to fight for that puck on the boards, because that's where his game is lacking. He doesn't have it yet. He's a light weight out there.
You have to put it in comparison to other players. Crosby is 5'11 if that 200lbs. Rust is 5'11 190+ Simone 6 foot 200lbs ZA 6 foot 200+ Simon 5'11 190....
Guns is 5'11 at 180lbs and that is the only other player on the team that light but he plays stronger than his weight.
People either want to knock him, or to say he's not getting a chance. But the guy needs to add weight. His play right now is a lot like Sheary's and that frankly didn't work out. Sheary avoided the boards because he knew he wasn't big enough. Sprong has the height to make you go, why isn't he on those boards, but when he does, he always gets beat or knocked down. That's because he doesn't have the strength yet. Then he looks bad. And if like Sheary, he doesn't go to the boards you look at him and say why aren't you there. No one askedthat of Sheary, we all knew why he wasn't there, he was 5'1.
Fans need to be patient. Let him gain 10-20 lbs of muscle and get the confidence that goes with it. He use to weigh 170lbs in wbs. He's on the right track. It's not going to happen over night. Not unless someone is gonna slip him some steroids.
