The Brodie trade is a bad one for the Bruins. Signing simmonds to that deal is like signing backes again

Yep, Sweeney has to have some inclination he can resign Brodie. If there is no circumstance where Brodie doesn't go to UFA to the highest bidder then the deal falls through or morphs into a deadline deal for 2 of the 3 assets. (Krug + 1st/Bjork vs Brodie as a rental). If Chara comes back it's a moot point though and Krug can be used for something else.

I wanted to give a different option for Krug than RNH. That's a solid deal that some people like, but LD might be a bigger hole next season than either 3rd C or 2nd RW if Chara retires. Are any of Grzelcyk, Vaakanainen, Moore or Zboril/others worthy of the top pair if you trade Krug for a forward?

I think Simmonds is faster / more athletic so he'd be a better fit than Backes is. Simmonds also has a more consistent shooting % over his career; when Backes was over 14% he hit over 25+ goals 4 times. When he's under he hit it 20goals 2 out of 4 including 2x <10.5% shooting seasons. Simmonds only shot under 12% his rookie season when he wasn't very good. His average the last 5 seasons is about 14% and he's scored an average of 28 goals. I think Backes would be looked at as a better addition if he could have scored 25 goals atleast once or twice. His high scored was 17 in 74 games, so I think the team would get a bit more out of Simmonds; anywhere from 2-4 25goal seasons and then who knows the last 2 years.
