I have this odd hatred for ACGMs that have trades that involve extensions. They happen once every 10 years, but every goddamn deal on here comes with an extension. Also, for the record, he's not eligible for an extension until mid season anyway.

Yes, i'm aware he isn't eligible for an extension for some time. And yes, extensions are rare with trades, but since Patches just did one it's reasonable to think her could do one as well once eligible. He doesn't have to sign an extension, and i think the value would still be similar.

But why would stone do that? All of a sudden he's a couple months away from UFA status at 26 or whatever? That's a pretty sweet spot to be in. I get if he could extend today, then he's buying out the risk of getting hurt, having a bad year or whatever....but he can't sign until over half way through the year. I don't think he would extend for less than 8x8.

The main point here is not whether he'll sign an extension. Point of this trade is for Boston to remain competitive with Tampa and Toronto and this helps them and assessing what the return may look like. But I also don't see why Stone wouldn't sign an extension. He'd be on a perennial Stanley Cup contender for awhile.

because the best way to get the most money is to hit the open market.
