Description
Spooner ranks 25th in qualified (over 40 gp) in EV scoring per 60 minutes. Here are his neighbors in that category:

39 SI Anze Kopitar
40 CA Ryan Spooner
41 CA Taylor Hall
42 SE Filip Forsberg
43 CZ David Pastrnak
44 RU Artemi Panarin
45 CA Jamie Benn

However, he had only 41 points, making his value unappreciated, and his price realtively low. Add in his correct age (25), and his reasonable cap hit (4M), and his likely availability (NYR likely sucks), and it's a reasonable target. How wont score on the PP, but the sharks have more than enough of those guys, so a good 2nd/3rd line threat at EV is a nice add.

Coyle ranks 85th in EV/60. That might not seem high, but it's the equivalent of a top liner! He too flies well under the radar and the sharks are very familiar with him as they drafted him only to trade him the burns deal. He had a pretty off year last year comparably and yet still was such a high rank at even strength. He has put up 30+ EV+SH points in each of the last 4 seasons, including 47 in 16-17. He also has the right age (26) and cap hit (3.2M), and wih Minny bumping up against the cap, he might hit the market.

These moves would be insurance against likely injury to Kane, Thornton, or any of the other top 9 forwards. Also still leaves room for trading a top 9 forward in case one of the major guys (panarin or seguin) becomes available, and provides insurance in case of underperformance by the rookies.

The thing with Spooner is that he is effective if he plays bottom 6 and PP1. He is PP specialist. If those deals happen I see FWD lines like this:

Kane-Pavelski-Coyle
Hertl-Couture-Meier
Spooner-Thornton-Labanc
Donskoi-Tierney-Goodrow (or anybody who steps in)

Being a B's fan I'm very familiar with Spooner....he's not a hidden gem lol

Ideally he's a 3rd line winger that helps you on your PP. His scoring comes in waves, but his defense is atrocious all season long. Fun player to watch when he's scoring, but frustrating to watch when he's not. Why? because that's really his only asset. If he's not scoring, he's not helping your team in any other area of the game.

As a Sharks fan, I have been a big promoter of acquiring Ryan Spooner. I think he does have deficiencies in his game, but I think he provides a good player on your third line. I look at him in this way: is he better than Boedker at the same price tag? Offensively, maybe. Defensively, no. I don't know that he is better than what you currently might have on the third line.

I think the current lines look something like this:

Kane-Pavelski-Thornton/Tierney
Hertl-Couture-Donskoi/Labanc
Labanc/Donskoi-Thornton/Tierney-Meier
Some combination of Goodrow, Suomela, Karlsson, Sorensen, the kids.

I don't agree with you putting Donskoi on the fourth line, although that probably has to do with you bringing in more forwards.

I also don't agree Spooner is an upgrade over Labanc, Donskoi, or Meier on the third line. He's basically a replacement for Tierney, but less effective defensively. So unless Thornton can't play, I don't think that makes a ton of sense.

Coyle would be a good addition, but, again, where does he fit? I don't like that we traded him (but I am happy we got Burnzie), but he doesn't have a clear spot.

Personally, I like Labanc on the Couture line. That puts a slower Donskoi with a powerforward in Meier. You'd basically be replacing Donskoi/Meier, so if you think Coyle is better than Donskoi, pull the trigger. Then you will likely want to move Donskoi, as he won't have a spot in the top 9.

In truth, my actual hope is for Seguin, Panarin, or Stone, as they slot in at the top of the lineup and add a missing star power that can transform an offense.

However, barring that, I don’t want to throw big assets away on overpaid, overhyped guys like Duchene.

Spooner and Coyle might be the kind of players who are poised to break into the next level (60-70 pts) if they got more ice and better quality ice time. They greatness of Vegas came from finding underutilized assets. I wonder if s guy like spooner and Coyle fall into that category.
