Description
Rebuild through the draft.

NO to 27+ year old expensive free agents.

NO to long term contracts for 27+ year old players.

NO to taking on bad contracts for assets just because we have cap space.

YES to more trades for draft picks in 2019 and 2020.

Yes to signing some older, gritty players to short term (2-year) deals to protect the kids and provide much needed grit.

YES to playing an in your face, hard to play against, style of hockey. I hope Quinn means it.

still teams may not want staal on that price either.....and there is his mmc. if you think Pateryn is an NHLer, he'll get more than 1.750.

you're not wrong about Staal. But I don't get your quibble with Pateryn. Matt Cane has him at 1.575. He's actually at the high side here... and he's a few hundred thousand high on Cole and Reaves. (which all make up for being short on Maroon)

But my issue is not maximizing assets at all. He says he wants to rebuild through the draft, But instead of maximizing the value of team control by dealing Namestnikov and Zuccarello for picks, he just either signs them for lazy short term deals or keeps them. That's just bad asset management. Among other issues here.

Zucc and Namestinkov will bring better deals at the trade deadline so why trade them now? This is just step 1 in the rebuild. At the trade deadline you trade those guys to maximize the return.

And no way Staal turns down a chance to play with his brother in Carolina.

I am a little high on Reaves, Cole and Pateryn because I would want them for 2 years and not longer, so offer them more for shorter terms. If Maroon needed a little more, fine, the cap space is there.

Going by your concepts, Cole, Pateryn and Zuccarello shouldn't be there. You should be re-signing Spooner to replace Zuccarello. Gilmour should be trade bait, or just traded, since you have numerous offensive defensemen.

Rebuilding through the draft makes sense; though, there's nothing wrong with adding depth in veterans, but they should be on one-year deals. By 2019-20, young Dmen like Lindgren, Hajek and Day should be either NHL rookies or sophomores.

I doubt your getting any of these guys to sign a 1 year deal. Why would they when they can get 2 or 3 year deals elsewhere. That's why I overpaid them a little to take 2 year deals. If the youngsters are ready to play in the NHL in a year, so be it, they are cheap and there is cap room to move them up and trade a Cole or a Pateryn if needed. However, if they need a few years to develop in Hartford, we have vets that can man the shop.
