dont buy out brouwer and let shore center the 4th. dube is going to first line in the ahl wing or center let him develop. you have 14 mil in cap space brouwer can just live up there

Yeah that's tons of Cap space, it would be a shame not to use it. Perhaps they can "buy" some additional high picks via additional trade/buy-outs or substitutions. Who might be targets? LAK, TBL, CHI, PIT, TOR?

Brouwer is not good, and would be a negative influence keeping him around. He needs to be bought out. Plus, he'd likely get into some games if the spare forward as well as blocking a better player.

I basically agree they are both about equal. I do not agree that a top 10 RW is equal to a top 10 RD. The D is worth more than the winger as they are harder to find, harder to replace and take longer to develop. Hence the pick disparity which basically accounts for the imbalance. If Ottawa loses Karlsson, which seems to be highly likely, they will need top-level D and can get back a top-level winger, plus picks in that trade. Sure you might like to keep Karlsson, who wouldn't, but it seems highly unlikely and this helps insulate against that probability, leaving the team better off in the long run.

The Flames would also love to keep Hamilton, are you kidding me? But, other teams are not going to value the prospects to the same level so they get a solid upgrade with a RHS RW and take the risk on a younger D.
