Description
EDIT: Based on the exchange in this thread I changed the trade package on a Myers/Gardiner trade to include Perrault coming back to the leafs and giving the jets more cap space for pending ufa/rfa's coming up in the next 2 years. Also, if gards is brought in then maybe there is a way for the jets to unload on Kulikov??

Bringing in Perrault also means that Grabner doesn't need to be signed. The 4th line now looks alot like the Marlies top line.. I like that.

Before I start this I want to state that I'm a fan of Gards, but Dermott will eventually replace him so I doubt the Leafs resign him after this year, especially with Borgman coming up the ranks with Lily as a possible bottom pairing in 2019/20.

The Jets are appraoching a cap crunch and with a loaded RD something has to give, and I think that means that Myers is the odd man out. Enstrom is a UFA this year and a decision needs to be made if the Jets resign him or let him walk. I think a Gardiner for Myers trade makes sense here because Gards can replace Enstrom as 2LD at the same cap hit that Enstrom will take up. But the larger benefit to the Jets is that by trading Myers they get $5.5M in new cap space that they can then use to sign Sastny (and given the chemistry that he had with the team I think the Jets would be wise to keep him). So, a Gards for Myers trade gives the jets a top 4 D of Morrisey/Buff, Gards/Trouba (which is pretty damn good) while leaving room on the bottom pairings for guys like Poolman, Chariot, Niku etc and then getting enough cap space to sign Sastney. That seems like a win to me.

Its no secret the Leafs need RD help and Myers does this. If he works out next year the Leafs can resign him, or go after bigger UFA fish in 19/20. The 19/20 D could then look like this
Reilly/Myers (or UFA)
Dermott/Z
Borgman/Lilly
Rosen/Ozzie

Willy moves to 3C in this roster (if Willy flakes out as a 3C, then the Leafs wait til 19/20 to sign a 3 C when there are better options on the market. But in the meantime give Willy a shot in 18/19) Moved Hyman to his strong side with MathewsLeafs and pick up Grabner for 4 LW. A PK combo of Grabner and Kappy would be fun to watch..

Thoughts??

I’m kind of in agreement here, 1.5m cap savings is tempting for the jets, but I think they’re best to leave their right side as is. Buff, Trouba, Myers is stacked, and while expensive, they will just have to look into moving a forward (Perrault) to sign stastny.
Without resigning Enstrom they have Morrisey, kulikov, Niku, and maybe chiarot/Morrow on the left side - so there isn’t a need to bring in another. They still have 8 dmen that can play, bringing in Gardiner only saves them 1.5mil and gives them too many lhd and not enough depth in the right.
All that said, I don’t hate the Gardiner trade, just don’t think it works

All very good points, and it's a damn shame because it almost seems unfair that the Jets have such depth on the right side (and you have alot of forward depth too). That said, I wonder about the possibility of a package for Perrault/Myers.. the combined cap savings on that could solve alot of problems for you guys.. and if the Lefs move willy to 3c Perrault would also plug a new hole for us on the wing (and add some C insurance too..) just thinking out loud

If it was like Gardiner and even something small for the Myers Perrault package I would do it. Jets need to unload Perrault at some point from my point of view
Edit: that said I would hate seeing Myers go, he was quite good, so I’m torn.
