The top line stays the same--they are a force when healthy, and the team has pieces and cap to build the lines below them.
2nd line-- DeBrusk proved he's capable of top 6 minutes (and scoring) so he stays at 2nd LW providing he doesn't develop a staggering sophomore slump. Krecji stays at 2nd C, and Heinen moves to 2nd RW unless the Bs sign (not much there) or trade for a top-6 RW.
3rd line--Bjork comes into camp healthy, and takes the LW here. JFK jumps up from Prov and takes the C position. Donato proved he can play RW (in a very small sample size) so I have him of JFK's right. This line will be extremely young, and extremely quick. If they play to their potential, this could be an incredible line.
4th line--- Locked and loaded the same as this past year.
I feel as though Backes is now out of place in the line up, as he's not quick enough to be in the top 6, and is too expensive to sit as a 4th liner. With his concussion in the playoffs, and his past history with them, there is always a slight chance that he has played his last game in the NHL (wouldn't wish it on anyone, but concussions are a nasty thing).
Defense:
1st Pairing- Stays the same, Chara and McAvoy
2nd Pairing- Sign de Haan. When healthy he is a very good defender, and at the start of this season was playing well offensively. Carlo comes back from injury and takes back his spot on the second pairing.
3rd pairing--I like Krug, but with my addition of de Haan in this mock, he is far too expensive for a 3rd pairing defender. I would be open to trading him for the right return (possibly top 6 RW or potential LHD who could take over the top pairing one day. Miller stays on the right and jumps up when necessary.
Gryz would be the 3rd pairing LHD if Krug is moved, and either he or McAvoy would take Krug's spot on the powerplay.
McQuaid stays on for defensive depth and rides out the remainder of his contract.
