Description
Cap hit going into next season is 56,688,333 which means if the cap goes up to say about 82.5 mill, that gives about 26 mill in cap with no overages and minimal bonuses. Don't kid yourselves Marleau is gone after next season either retirement (Robidas island) or trade. His contract was built for that. So when they give up that cap space it goes up to 32.5 in cap space.

Matthews 8x10 mill. Before you say I'm crazy, he was injured a lot this season and during the season he was awesome, but during the playoffs so far he's been invisible. You don't pay huge money (12 mill) for someone who disappears during the playoffs, id actually say 9-9.5 mill but that's too low. He's got to get at least Eichel money.
Marner 8x7.25 found Austons money and effort. Marner has been the driving force for this team since he's been put with Marleau. I wouldn't even be mad if he got more. 8x8 max though.
Kapanen 3x2.75 he's been incredible since being a full time Leaf and imo hasn't even reached full potential. He can play a full 200 ft game and again wouldn't be mad at giving him more. 3x4.5 max
Gardiner has been great and a terrible but mostly solid and very underrated but with Dermott he can be let go.
Hainsey can be let go and replaced with a different veteran PK dman to replace him.
Sparks 2x2 he's a great backup and can be a good filler if Freddy goes down for a particular amount of time.

So with that all said I believe the total cap hit is 20 mill. That's plenty of room to either keep Marleau or to fill in holes where needed. Possibly that replacement vet D for Hainsey and veteran presence on forward to replace Marleau.

I like the idea of Tavares and the whole a great defence is a great offence but a great defence is a great defence.

Everbody has an opinion but I think Leaf fans are really being too optimistic that Marleau and his contract is just going to disappear in 2019/20. He can't retire without his 35 + contract and the cap being assigned to some other team, which is possible IF he retires. Robidas was not NHL ready after his broken leg. Lupul would've been sent to the minors if healthy. Marleau with his NMC can't be sent to the minors so his cap hit is still a Leaf.
And just knowing Marleau just superficially he isn't going to retire if he still NHL good and a chance to win a Cup in his last NHL season. Sure his contract was structured for a possible retirement, but there is no proof at all he wants to retire.
But certainly your cap is managed well for next though I wonder why fans of Oilers, Leafs and Canadians think Carlson is going to sign with their teams.

Well 1st I'm going to address the easiest thing. I signed Carlson but it doesn't HAVE to be Carlson, I'm just hoping it's a BIG name defender to help the back end cause we NEED it. I think we need more then one but that's my opinion.

Like I said in the description, I did notice after I didn't include Sparks 2 mill but that also is if he plays backup next year. But yes I did pay attention to the cap. We don't need to trade Marleau but it would make the cap easier to control.

There are "lots" of potential good Dmen UFAs in 2019, so it might be best time to sign one of then. Also by 2019, Leafs will have better indication of what the available cap will be. The UFA is pretty slim this year.
Oh, I agree with you, no having Marleau would be best in 2019...maybe even next year, but just unlikely it's gonna to happen.

You really think Matthews and Marner aren't getting extended the second they able to? I say do the contracts at the same time. Seperate rooms. Lou signs Matthews and Pridham signs Marner. Once those 2 are resigned then you can go into free agency and take your pick of the litter. 2 even, cause Hainsey And Gardiner are gone unless something durastic changes in Gardiners game next season. Those are 2 big minute guys that need to be replaced and I don't want to go into a season with
Rielly-Zaitsev
Dermott-Carrick
As my top 4.

Well if Marner and Matthews are signed July 1st that would prove your point of "a second they are able to". Hey I hope it happens because then the Leaf would have more cap certainty a year earlier. Agree with you that Gardiner won't/can't be resigned in the summer of 2019. But with the lineup you have, a just 4m of Gardiner leaving, and Horton on LTIR. that's 9.3m. where is the cap room Marner, Matthews and others in 2019?
