Description

A scrappy team in the middle of a rebuild. Bigger story off the ice than on it. Feel that the most important thing they can do is get Durzi under contract long term. Doing so sets a tone in the belief in the organization. If Durzi signs short term, or decides he wants out, some of the clear cornerstones like Moser and Cooley could very well follow that lead. A critical offseason in the desert.

1. Signing Moser and Durzi long term. As I eluded to, this simply sets the tone for this rebuild. They are the cornerstones of this blueline.

2. Forbort: a vet D with some jam to his game. A good stable presence for Kesselring.

3. Chatfield: such an underrated D (who could very well end up remaining in Carolina). Solid 200 foot game here. Nothing flashy. Suggest he has a similar game to Valimaki.

Side Notes:

1. Have Hayton at 2C as the skill is there. Looking for a bounce back season.

2. Maybe loaded with draft picks, but not moving them to fill out. Definitely not the time. Gotta continue to stock the cupboards.

3. It maybe tempting to have Geekie on this roster, but I think there is more benefit to having him in Tucson to start the year. Should be enough moving off this roster at the TDL, that if his game translates to pro hockey, he finishes the year in Pheonix.

4. Lamoureux should go back to the Q. Same thing.... don't rush good things.

Overall: scrappy, but will miss the playoffs. Bjugstad, Kerfoot and possibly Schmaltz move at the deadline as the rebuild continues.

The cupboard is already pretty nice: Geekie, Lamoureux, But, Simashev, Hrabal, Doan, Szuber, and Raty, plus Lipkin, Tanner, Miko, Castagna playing well in the NCAA.

I say ARZ swings a little bigger literally and metaphorically and try and sign Zadorov or Myers.

But I think such a move remains dictated by their ability to get Moser and Durzi long term.

That would indicate a vote if confidence for the organization, and may get some of the more marquee FAs talking.

As it sits at this moment, I think it is a stretch..... but that could change.
