Description

I think a trade like this is the most realistic trade over the next month, just a straight player swap.

Reilly Smith isn't a bad player and he won a cup last year, he just has not fit into the pens system.

He's slightly more expensive than Saad ($500K more AAV) but less term than Saad. STL could flip Smith next year at the deadline as well.

I know a lot of pens fans wouldn't be thrilled about Saad, but feel like it's the best shot at making an adjustment.

Not a lot of other moves to be made imo with cap issues around the league.

I would do Saad for Smith, but to me the bigger issue is why do so many players come here and underperform under this coach and system? I really think it's time for a fresh voice and system. Too many examples of players either coming here and struggling or leaving here and flourishing. Zero accountability. Horrendous power play. Something needs to change.

Sullivan is fine for me, he's made a lot of adjustments this year on the fly.

As for players underperforming here? Idk... I think it depends on the player personally. Smith seems completely uninterested in being in Pittsburgh, I think getting traded off a cup winner kind of hurt his confidence.

I'm not sure what players you're specifically referring to, but think some of it is just bad luck.
