Remove POULIOT from the deal add a third rounder and have TORONTO eat 1m a year and great deal for the pens. Get a top 4 dman w a 6m hit. The contract is a year or two too long and 1-2 m over budget, but it would stabilize the defense. The contract is my biggest issue w the deal. PHANEUF is a top 4 d, but it would be a risky move w that contract.

buddy, Scuderi and Kunitz are garbage. They are cap dumps and you are getting a top 4 dman so the one measly prospect is a fair price to pay. And no the Leafs are not taking any money back. We took too much on Kessel's contract already.

You are correct. SCUDERI is done and KUNITZ is almost out of gas if not already. They are cap dumps to make the deal work. PHANEUF contract is going to look real bad in the last 2 years maybe 3rd. The contract is the main issue. You can't pay for past production in this league. You need to pay for future production at a reasonable rate. PHANEUF to PIT doesn't make much sense for either side unless he wants out of TOR and demands a trade to PIT. Thats unlikely. And PIT doesn't really have the prospects to get him. PIT untouchable prospects have to be SPRONG and POULIOUT, unless its a cant miss deal.

Let's just imagine that the three main players waive their NTC. Phanuef for Scuds and Kunitz, talent wise is a bad trade for the Leafs...Phanuef is playing well (finally) now. The money is about the same for two years.....then Phanuef for another four years for Pens.
Cap hell still for Pittsburg. Pens fans may be seeing the plateauing and decline of Sid as you approaches thirty years of age. The poor skating Phanuef is going to show a fast decline also and soon. Pens stay away from this deal. (and I'm a Leaf fan)
Even just Skuds and Kunitz for Phanuef would really help the Leafs, and hurt the Pens long term.
