I am sorry but I think all the trades weakened the roster and the chances of making playoffs
1. you trade 4 players for a third pair defenseman
2. you trade our best FO player Bozak just had 55pts last season for depth D and picks, and break third line Kadri/Komarov/Brown that was the best efficient line last year, playing against oposition top lines and scoring a bunch of goals on their own.
3. Then trade away another 2 players and a pick for a guy who can't score on an empty net
What is it, you are not comfortable with 50 contracts on the roster?, why does so many people trade away just to reduce nbr contracts?, Leafs got into this position on purpose otherwise wouldn't sign Loverde or Mueller etc..they want depth and depth for the depth players in case injuries decimate roster and veteran guys to provide leadership on the Marlies roster as well.
Leafs already have 9 picks this year, so there is no need for those either.
Kapanen if is not playing better play with Marlies a prominent role 5-5 and PP, PK getting more confidence and experience than sitting on press box watching NHL games...he doesn't need to clear waivers so can be called up when required.
I will respond to your thoughts in order.
1. trading the 4 for 1 as you said not only clears 3 roster spots to make other trades or signings as the season goes on, also clears up a bit of cap space as well. Makes the Brown signing easier when it gets done. Lindberg will never make the leafs roster he has fallen so far down the leafs prospect depth chart. Levio and Fehr are 4th line, Marlies, or press box same as Marchenko being bottom pairing, marlies, or press box. So essentially upgrading Marchenko to Lovejoy while opening up roster slots and cap room.
2. Bozak is gone after this season, might as well get some picks for him. Kadri had a break out year and making good money, can't be playing on the 3rd line. Will be much better with JVR and Marner. Holden has a smaller cap hit and easier to resign if we choose too and can be traded easy at the deadline as his contract is easy to take on.
3.Sheahan had a terrible year but still has talent and know Babs system already. Cheap 3rd line center and under control as a RFA. With the other moves Marincin is in the press box and Sosh is 4th line at best and seemed to fall out of favor with Babs last season.
As for already having 9 picks, ... why not have more gives then assets to move at the deadline to add a big impact player.
Hard to see how these deals weaken the team, gotta look past this season, i agree kaps should not sit in the press box just saying he is the 13th. Ben Smith can sit in the press box
