Description
Have seen a lot of Marner to WSH ACGMs by both Caps and Leafs fans so I thought I would give it a try. This is loosely based off of the Tkachuk to FLA trade last year. Keep in mind that Marner is a worse player, has a lot less team control, and makes more money which lessens the return.

TOR gets their hometown guy in Wilson who plays the hard-hitting style they (supposedly) lack, a young cost-controlled 2nd pairing defenseman who also is super physical, a high pick in the deepest draft in a decade, a B prospect that had a great D+1 year, and probably around 3m in cap space next year.

Caps would be making a huge bet on snively and mcmichael being NHL players. I think its worth it though to get that true elite offensive player in Marner

None of the things you are comparing are equal. Hilarious to think a 100 point player (Huberdeau) is a hell of a lot more valuable than Wilson. Weegar got some Norris love that's a lot better than Fehervary and finally, the 40th overall pick is not the same as 25th overall. Just drop the whole idea. The Leafs aren't moving their stars. All will remain.

I would say 40oa this year is comparable to the panthers' 2025 first (not 25oa). And yes, obviously Wilson and Fehervary are not the same as Huberdeau and Weegar, but Marner despite being an amazing player is not at quite the same level as Tkachuk and with only 2 years left on his contract, not 8.

Make it full retention and I think the Avs do have to consider it. With Landy's LTIR money the need to trade one of their D has lessened albeit not disappeared. Girard's value is higher (at least to the Avs) than Kuzy's at present.

I really don’t like giving all that up for Marner. I don’t think there’s a trade that makes both teams happy.

Not the same level eh? So I guess a Selke finalist, 26 year old who has been on a 100 point pace for 3 years running is worth half as much as a 100 point player who isn't a Selke finalist. The classic leaf tax eh?
