Détails additionnels:
The avalanche have a surplus of defence, and with Landeskog out, they may look to use that to add offence.

Both Toews and Nylander have 1 year left on their deals, so this could be a beneficial swap for both teams.

A 1 for 1 swap could be beneficial for both teams, but I could also see the Leafs preferring to target a right shot defenceman, rather than a left shot.

There is a lot to like about Schmaltz. Do I think Arizona moves him? Probably not, but it is still an option if they get the right offer.

Avs decline. They've no need to move any D at present, and likely couldn't afford to re-sign Nylander after Landy comes back.

While I agree with you about this deal, I go back and forth on whether they need to move a D (with Toews being my preference) but, at present, I look at it this way: the Avs need help up front and have nothing in the system (sad and pathetic as it may be) they seem keen on using. The UFA market this season is, to put it mildly, pretty damn bad plus it's always overpriced. They should be in the trade market for help up front but it has to be affordable moving forward. If they can find a landing spot for Toews that nets them what they need up front, they should definitely do it. I don't say that lightly; Toews is a great D and makes them a lot better but they clearly need help up front if they're going to get back to the final.

'If they can find a landing spot for Toews that nets them what they need up front, they should definitely do it.'

Whilst I somewhat agree with that I don't see this as being what they need and that's the crux of it. IF they could find the right package for Toews I could certainly see them considering it, but he's not a guy to move on a whim. I know Toews is your preference and understand the reasons why. There's a logical argument for moving any one of Toews, Girard and Byram. All have their pros and cons. It's simply nice for the Avs to have that luxury to a degree. Using it in the best way will be the trick. Personally I'm just using it to blank out the disastrous D corps from the 'annus horribilis' of 2016-17 and others.

They definitely need to improve up front and their system is a black hole, the UFA market sucks and is overpriced and, since D is a position of strength, they will have to deal from there if they deal at all. It's going to be very interesting to see how they play things this summer.

Well that is why its a 1 year thing. Nylander is a placeholder until they get Landeskog back. Toews has 1 year left as well. That is why this deal works. I personally can't see the Avs bringing back Toews anyways, when they already have Girard and Byram on the left side. They can't afford all 3 of those guys. For that reason, they move Toews, who has 1 year left, for Nylander, who has 1 year left. The idea here is not for them to re-sign Nylander. The idea is to boost their offence while Landeskog is out by trading a guy they probably can't afford to re-sign anyways after the season ends, and who they don't really need in the long run with Byram and Girard on the Left side.

Toews is your biggest trade asset this offseason imo. That's all I'm really saying. And you won't find a 30-40 goal scorer in this years weak free agency class, so acquiring Nylander would be a very smart move.
