Description
Sharks look to acquire another top pick. The top of the draft is liking mighty spicy with Eiserman and Celebrini. Sharks will make some moves to not lose every game but still lose a good amount. This season is a big measuring stick for many players. Analysis on the moves below.

1. Sharks and labanc part ways. When given top 6 minutes he produced well and overall has good analytics. Far too often was placed on the 4th line which doesn’t match his play style. Trade valuation is Neiderreiter trade, however with retention Labanc is much cheaper and the pick isn’t for 3 drafts.

2. If there’s ever a time to move on from Karlsson it’s now. Sharks retain %26 percent even though Grier says he only wants to retain 18%. He’s retained as much as 34% (Burns) so I would not be surprised if he retained more if the return was right.

3. Sharks punt the goalie situation to another year. Driedger from Seattle in the Karlsson trade has a year on his deal and is coming back from that major injury. He’s never been a starter in the nhl and thus is still unproven. He’s a low risk add for a year in which the team will be bad again.

4. Add size and physicality. In the post season pressers it was mentioned the team wasn’t physical enough and got pushed around a good majority of the season. Bringing in guys like Barbashev and Dumba address this need. Their contracts could be more as well with the cap space they currently have.

5. Bottom line: this team will not be good again next year and they should be okay with that. They have some nice pieces in the organization, and will add more in this draft, to really bolster the depth in the organization. Signings like Barbashev and Dumba are okay because there a lack of nhl ready prospects and they will be useful for when the team is ready to compete in a few years.

Sharks first 3 picks in 2023 draft:
~4th OA Matvei Michkov
~21st OA (via SEA) Gabe Perreault (doubt he is there now) if not then take Brayden Yager
~26th OA (via NJ) Lukas Deagicevic
~36th Tom Willander

The Dumba contract is hideous. His offense is basically all dried up at this stage in his career. Kind of disagree with those draft picks too. Pretty meh overall. Keeping Ferraro is a mistake as well with how he has regressed over the last three years.

Dumba is a terrible fit for SJ.
No reason to retain on Lebanc. you can buy him out for 800k x2. Move him for no retention of buy him out.

I agree Ferraro has regressed, you can tell who thinks Locked on Sharks word is gospel, but I would say this year is his sh*t or get off the pot year. Dumba adds the physicality they are looking for and there’s plenty of money to go around with Karlsson gone. They have to fill that RD spot with someone once Karlsson is gone and they will likely have to overpay to entice someone to come to San Jose

I like the idea of these moves. I had a similar ACGM trying to accomplish the same thing and came to similar conclusions:

1. As long as the goaltending is bad, the rest of the team doesn't matter too much, and we should still get a top 8 pick. Without Karlsson, almost a top 5 guaranteed. Does the D corps crack 10 goals in his absence?

2. Labanc will likely not be with the team next year. I think Grier sells low in order to get him off the team.

3. We likely sign a RHD in UFA this year, but I don't think Dumba is the answer. Maybe another Benning-like contract for a lesser-known guy.

4. Ferraro should stay until the trade deadline at least. In defense of his play last season, he was playing in a pair of 2 LHD a lot of nights with the likes of Nick Cicek, Radim Simek, and Jacob MacDonald. None of those guys have made strong cases that they should get consistent minutes at the NHL level. In any case, selling him now would also be selling low, which doesn't make a ton of sense since he buys into the culture of the team.

Agree with basically all of this. Driedger would just be a guy to take a swing on that is low risk. Only reason I did Dumba was for the physicality and I know that is something they will be looking for.

As far as Ferraro, I think all the conjecture on him being put in tough situations is a cop out for him. This was his 4th season in the nhl and he was significantly worse than any other year. I don’t think hes not salvageable or anything like that but I think some people are bailing him out too much. I wouldn’t mind moving him with all the LD depth they have coming.
