I get that D are overpriced since Taylor Hall trade Nylander is worth at least 2 Montour's. Nylander would be a major piece in a trade for a STUD number 1 D, not a player like Montour. No reason to believe the Ducks couldn't resign JVR to a reasonable deal, and 30 goal scoring, 60 point wingers do not have "limited" value, even if they do have one year left on their deals. The ducks have a surplus of D with a great top 4 in place, need scoring, the fit is potentially there for a deal. I get the ducks may pass, thats fine, but to think Montour is worth Willie Nylander is hilarious.
Fine. I'm not going to argue with your valuation of Montour. That's your opinion of him and I accept that. Personally, I think he's still a little raw and needs work, but he's got the makings of a quality top pairing D-man. He's a superb skater (pretty much as good as Fowler), great shot, good passing ability, very , very high IQ and, most importantly IMO, he communicates well and commands the play. He's only improved since being on the team late last season and I expect him to break out fully this season (looked incredible in the playoffs already mind you). I think he holds a lot more value than even multiple years of JVR. JVR is soft, weak defensively and only scores off the break or just scavenges off other people's hard work. He doesn't drive the play at all, floats a tonne and for those reasons I don't want him. He may get points, but the other areas of his game of so weak it really doesn't matter to me. He's a less flashy version of Bobby Ryan, but with more balance and I was happy when we moved Ryan. Another player who scrounged off the works of others (mostly Getzlaf). No interest in moving a cost-controlled asset for JVR. I wouldn't even move Vatanen for him.
JVR has 1 yr left on contract. He's a TDL special at this point. You'll get a late 1st + prospect for him or, more likely, you'll make the playoffs and keep him for the run. He's not worth a tonne and I certainly don't see him getting you a right-handed top 4 D-man. You may, because you have vested interest in that happening, but I think most fans of opposing teams would say "nah". The guys a UFA soon and going to want 7M+ for the next 7-8 years. He's not worth that contract. Maybe TOR can pay it, but most teams can't and won't. Hence, he has "limited value", even if you're unwilling to recognise it.
Finally, I will say that Nylander doesn't get you a true #1D-man. #1D-men are just as rare as true #1C. You'd be looking at Matthews if you'd want one of those. Nylander is probably worth a future top pairing guy and you might get lucky and have that guy become a #1D, but I don't think anyone trades away a player they know is going to become a #1D i.e. Lindholm, Werenski, Jones, Risto, Parayko, etc. for Nylander. If you ask me, I don't see why Nylander wouldn't be valued at the same level as Drouin. He's 1 year younger, sure, and got more points, but I'd argue that they had similar goal totals and Drouin was on a bad team this season playing alongside the likes of Boyle, Killhorn and Namestnikov. Meanwhile, Nylander was on a better team playing alongside Austin "the true elite talent" Matthews. Anyway, if we agree that Drouin and Nylander hold similar value (we won't because you have vested interest in saying Nylander is worth more even though most neutrals will say "they're even" or "Nylander is slightly more valuable", but we'll go on), Drouin only go Sergachev, a potential top 4 guy, + late 1st round pick. Therefore, I find it hard to understand why you think Nylander will draw more than that. Seth Jones got a proven #1C in Johansen. Larsson, a #2D, got Hall. Top quality D-men are worth an absolute tonne. Given that I think Montour has top pairing potential and that I think Nylander is worth a top pairing D-man, I think Montour for Nylander is close to fair. Clearly, you disagree, which is fine. It's not a deal that looks likely to happen anyway.

Asking for nylander is hilarious.
This site treats middle pair defensemen as if they are gods
Montour has top pairing potential. Hasn't even played a full NHL season and was playing comfortably in our top 4. I know that not playing a full NHL season isn't a good thing, but if he's already in our top 4 now and is only improving with every game, I find it hard to believe he won't get better over the course of a full season. Us Duck fans were ready to let go of Vatanen, our #3D, because we're that confident in Montour. Sure, he's a top 4 guy now, but the guys reached the top level of every league he's been in and I don't expect that to change.
For me, Montour is a keeper. Maybe a deal around Vatanen could be made, but not for 1 yr of JVR.

I know man its crazy, you would think Josh Manson is the second coming of Chris Pronger if you just followed this site.
You would think Nylander was the second coming of Guy Lafleur if you just followed this site. Did I do it right?
D-men are expensive. If you haven't learnt that yet, I don't know what to tell you. No one is going to accept players you don't want who are on expiring contracts for quality young D-men.
