With that much cap space the Leafs use at least some of it for a better 3rd liner or two

One of the reasons I'm very high on Henrique is because he'd cover the 3C spot for next season as well. However he'd take up most of the remaining cap space.

If it's just for 2023-24, I don't think it would cost a ton to get him double-retained down to the $1.5Mish AAV he'd have there - send Anaheim a 2nd & a prospect for Rico with 50% retention, send Team B a 4th for 25% extra, no?

there's two old Leafs fans that go to the same bar every Friday night, around 5 PM. they hang out, catch up on their lives, talk about their kids, and they each have one beer. Always the same, week after week, month after month, year after year. No matter how long they stick around after work, they have the one beer, finish it, and never order another. Finally, one of the bartenders that's been working there for some time walks up to those guys after they've finished their drinks.

"Guys, you've been coming here forever, and it's always the same thing - one beer, and you're gone. Now, I'm not gonna complain, but I gotta ask - is there a reason you guys have never ordered a second round?"

The two old Leafs fans look at each other, confused. After a minute of incredibly awkward silence, one of them turns to the bartender and responds.

"No idea what you're talking about pal - in all my life, I've never heard of anything happening after the first round."

i think the problem with double retention is finding the team willing to do it. cap space and retention has become an asset in of itself and a lot of sellers would want that availability considering the salary cap isn't going up much for the foreseeable future. would be ideal though to do it, an extra million and a half opens up a lot for the leafs
