Nice scenario, but I really wonder if the Rangers can get rid of Nash's 7.8 m with two years remaining and Staal's 5.7 m with 5 years remaining, as easily as you suggest.
Most good teams who may want these veterans do not have cap space, poor teams who may be rebuilding may have no interest in these veterans. Both Nash and Staal have NMCs and could veto any deal.
Certainly the Leafs as poor as they are, wouldn't want any vet Dman....isn't Phanuef and Robidias enough age and salary already. Why would a team give prospects or draft picks when possible UFAs are available. Maybe the Blues could barely fit in Nash's salary, but would they give up anything substantial? Doubtful. Maybe they would be better just to sign a high scoring UFA and give up nothing.
